Police: Ayer woman hurt in home invasion

AYER -- An apparent home invasion left a 39-year-old woman with "life-threatening injuries" early Thursday morning, according to the Ayer Police Department.

The woman was "physically assaulted" and suffered "multiple physical injuries, and rescue workers flew her by Medflight helicopter to a Boston hospital, an Ayer police press release stated.

Police responded to a call at 4:19 a.m. reporting that a resident of the building at 41 West Main St. was injured, the release said.

When police arrived at the address, they noticed a smell of smoke in the building and contacted the fire department, the release said.

Police did not release the woman's name.

Ayer and state police, state police crime scene services and the Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the assault and the investigation is ongoing, the release said.

Representatives from the Middlesex District Attorney's Office and the Ayer Police Department could not be reached for comment late Thursday afternoon.

Wow, we lived there when we were stationed at Devens, sounds like it has really changed. We didn't live on post either. We drive through Devens when we are in that neck of the woods.

I looked it up on map quest and it is outside what used to be the front gate of Devens. We lived on Groton School Rd when we lived there. Yeah, that area could be a bit rough. We were there in 85.

Same year I lived there. It was a building full of little studio apartments, mostly filled with GI's. The week before I moved in there was a stabbing. The blood stains were still visible along the upper and lower walkways outside the units, where the guy went from door to door, knocking and looking for help...

One of my post checks is at a business in Devens. When I go there at night, I'm the only one there....and ofcourse I'm "officially" unarmed. There aren't any homes in the area tho. I suppose that's a good thing. I still look around before getting out of the car tho.
