Richard Cohen takes Hillary Clinton to task for pushing a blantantly unconstitutional ban on flag burning in a shameless attempt to reposition herself for a presidential run.

I also believe that banning flag burning is WRONG. You want to burn the flag? Go ahead, it isn't illegal (nor should it be). I'm against burning the flag, but making it a crime is ludicrous. And to push legislation that has already been proven to be unconstitutional is pandering.

BUT, don't let me catch you doing it (burning the flag, that is). I'm sure any LEO that sees what I do will turn his head and say "I didn't see anything." 8)

I'm with you. I think that if you want to burn the flag, that's your right under the 1st. Do I personally think that you should be able to do it? No, I would say that it's treason. But it's still your right to do it...

Well, I've burned a few American Flags. But I was in the Scouts, and the flag has lived it's life. And it was a proper ceremony.

And burning is the preferred means of disposal. Burying is a last resort.

Oh, anyone that wants to burn one can try and burn the one on my right shirt sleeve.

Ok, this is what we did in the Scouts when one of our troop flags started to fade, tear, or fray.

Diplay the flag and give it's history then say the Pledge of Allegiance.

We would read a passage, but for the life of me, I can't remember what.

The Bugle guy would play taps whild we would cut the blue out of the flag.

You would place the stripes onto the fire and wait for that to be burned then place the stars onto the fire.

We would all sing the America tis of thee.

That's pretty much what I remember.. I know that there was more that we did. But it's been years.

From Army Regulatio 840-10. I'm sure the rest of the branches of Service (esp the Marine Corps) will say the same thing.

(2) Outdoor display. Unserviceable outdoor display flags should
be destroyed privately, preferably by burning, shredding or by some
other method that does not show irreverence or disrespect to the
flag.
