I'm a little uncertain about this law. I've searched but didn't find any definitive answer to it. If I get a shotgun with a fixed (tube) feeding defice, that holds more than 5 shells, does it have to be pre-1994?

No, not even if it's semiautomatic.

However, if a detachable magazine is involved, or a pistol grip, then the rules may change a bit.

Also, be aware that if the gun is pump actuated (eg, not a semi) it is exempt from the MA AWB, so even if it does have a magazine (eg, like that mossberg 10 round drum thing) it won't matter.

Only if it is semiautomatic and also has a pistol grip and/or folding/telescoping stock.

a pump shotgun has no capacity limit.
