BREAKING NEWS: SOURCES SAY DEMOCRATS WILL INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO “PACK” THE SUPREME COURT WITH 4 NEW JUSTICES
by Kevin Ryan
Democrats in the House and Senate are working on legislation to expand the size of the Supreme Court by 4 seats, and could introduce it as early as tomorrow. The Dispatch is reporting that three congressional sources confirm the news.
The bill would bring the total number of Justices to 13 from the current 9. If the new justices are all appointed by President Biden, that would immediately swing the court from a 6 to 3 conservative advantage to a 7 to 6 liberal advantage.
The Dispatch says the bill is led in the House by Judiciary Committee Chair Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Subcommittee chair Hank Johnson (D-GA), and Rep. Mondaire Jones (D-NY). In the Senate, the bill is being championed by Sen. Ed Markey (D-MA).
If true, it would be a game-changing maneuver that could further divide the nation at a time when partisanship is at a multi-generational high.
It would also face stiff resistance, perhaps even among Democrats.
Just last week, left-leaning Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer warned that packing the court would hurt “confidence in the courts, and in the rule of law itself” and “its power to act as a ‘check’ on the other branches.” And before she died, Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg also warned against the move, which she said would turn the Court into an overtly political body.
Developing story…
