My grandfather lived his whole life in Little Falls, NY and passed away a long time ago but had a close friend who worked at the Remington factory in Ilion, NY a few miles down the road. I don't know of a direct connection but since everything in his collection was Remington I assume it all came through his friend. I inherited his firearms after he passed which included this rifle that I've recently come to realize is unusual. He took many deer with it and has been well used and taken care of and still runs great.

From my understanding, the Remington 14 only came in Remington's rimless calibers (.25, .30, .32, .35) which for the most part aren't available any longer. Except mine is chambered in 30-30! It came with a couple boxes of vintage ammo as well. Like all of the vintage Remingtons it has the bottom of a casing embedded in the left side of the action. Wikipedia says that the original prototypes of the Model 14 were made in 30-30 but that these were never made available for sale. But here I have one. The other difference is in the tube magazine. For the Remington rimless cartridges it was spiraled to allow for pointed bullets to be used. But mine is smooth.

Does anyone have an idea of what this is? I don't even know for sure if it's a Model 14 since there's no markings on it for the model.

Serial Number? I cannot seem to locate serial number data for prior to 1921.

It's for sure a 14 and an early one. The later models also had the take down screw inserted from the opposite side as well as the spiral mag tube.

Hold onto it.

When Remington finally and mercifully goes under this year it will be worth some money some day......you know.....a momento of when Remington actually made a quality product.

Serial number is 34514, grade C. If it is a Model 14 then according to this site it's from 1914 which would seem to match up with being an early production sample.

Thanks smokey-seven! That's the kind of info I was really hoping the collective wisdom here would have. I wasn't aware of those changes part way through the run and thought that the spiral mag tube was a feature from the very beginning. I'll send Ian McCollum a message. I'm definitely not looking to part ways with this since it's a piece of family history but I'd love to know its full story.

The Remington Model 12 22 pump (same patent) and early gun and the take down is on the bolt side as is yours. If you look at pics from later guns, on the bolt side, you will see the non-knob and the bottom threads of the knurled knob. I think they held the 22 to the bolt side. Remington tried to keep model numbers after the patent date. My 22 is 1912 thus Mod 12. They kept the Mod 14 designation for your gun and added a letter "A" for later models.
