Has anyone ever had a s&w 3rd gen go fully auto???

IF you or someone you know had that happen, which I'm not saying is the case, then STFU about it and get it back to S&W for repair real quick. The ATF will NOT be friendly if they found out, and they don't GAF if it was an accident or malfunction.

I was thinking about buying one but I heard these guns were prone to this malfunction. Iv never had a D/A S/A before, always a striker fired. I heard this at the range from th e a glock armorer.[thinking]

Thought I heard the early rounds going off locally.

defintely got my attention.

Yeah, but it must be cool eh?!

No it's not cool, and the ATF will hang you out to dry if you get caught even if it is accidental.

Any semi-auto can go full auto with a worn sear. I have never heard of any 3rd Gen S&W going full auto as characteristic of either the design or the quality of parts. 3rd Gen autos were generally well made. In fact the West Virginia State Police just placed an order for the Third Gen 4566 TSW .45 ACP pistol.

I agree with Mark about the sear. Send it back to S&W and they will take care of it. I have a 3rd gen 6906 that is dependable and is as trouble free as any semi-auto that I have ever owned.

Dump that gun off at the S&W guard shack ASAP.... or call them up and get a call tag for it.

My 6906 doubled on me after about 40,000 rounds. I gave it a complete disassembly and cleaning and the problem was solved.

Questios: Did you ever replace the sear? How tight was the gun after 40,000 rounds and were you using the original recoil spring? How much wear on the barrel, if any?

Same sear. I have replaced the recoil spring several times. Slide to frame fit reasonably tight for a well used stock gun. No appreciable barrel wear. I intend to replace the hammer and sear just to be safe.

Thank you for the information. After 40K rounds that speaks pretty well of the gun IMO and reinforces my belief that 3rd Gen guns as a whole were very decent firearms.

I had a 6906 go full auto on me back in 1990. I had just inserted a full mag and dropped the slide.

When I took the second shot, the firing pin jammed in a position where it protruded about 1/8 of an inch from the breech face. This was shallow enough
to allow the round to ride up and over firing pin, which then set off the round when the slide slammed home.

It was NOT fun. It scared the crap out of me. Having 10+ rounds rip out of a hand gun when you are expecting 1 round is quite an experience.

I called S&W that night. To say that they wanted the gun back would be an understatement. They overnighted me a shipping label. They then followed up with me on the phone to make sure I shipped it off (which I had)
The gun was completely stock. It was less than two years old, with fewer than 1000 rounds through it.

Happened to a guy at the club a few years ago. it was a brand new S&W 1911, although I don't recall the model. Scared the crap out of him. It went back to S&W that day...
