Are threaded barrels on handguns legal in MA? If not, what has to be done to the threads to make it legal? Can the flash suppressor in the picture be permanently attached to the barrel to make it legal?

The threaded barrel on a (typical) handgun is perfectly legal. It didn't
violate the federal AWB so it would be no different under MA law, which is -almost- a virtual mirror of that ban.

IIRC the only state that has a fetish about that (on regular handguns)
is CA.

I don't understand the need for a flash hider on a firearm like that. If your worried about your location being discovered while touching off a .50 cal (I assume?) you would be better off with a silencer. If anything that gun could use a muzzle break instead.

Well, to each his own. I was thinking about getting a flash hider on my 100% German (no S&W import marks) P99AS. But I'm now thinking of getting the compensator and some 20rnd mags instead. Perhaps in another lifetime, though, as the cost is as much as a whole new (S&W imported) P99 handgun.

So, no laughing smiley faces.[wink]

Depends.

If handgun has an unloaded weight of 50oz or more (among a few other things), a threaded barrel isn't legal in this state (unless the muzzle device is permanently attached).

Turns out I was wrong....

It has to have "two or more" of the following...

Semi-automatic pistols with detachable magazines and two or more of the following:

* Magazine that attaches outside the pistol grip
* Threaded barrel to attach barrel extender, flash suppressor,
handgrip, or silencer
* Barrel shroud that can be used as a hand-hold
* Unloaded weight of 50 oz (1.4 kg) or more
* A semi-automatic version of an automatic firearm

So given the beast above, if it weighs more than 50 ozs, that
means JackO would have to get the supressor welded on, or get
the threads rounded off.

Of course, if the gun was manufactured before Sept 13 1994, none
of this matters. I would wager a guess that given it's configuration
it might indeed be pre-ban, unless it was made recently. IMO this possibility
is certainly worth checking into.

We're talking about a Deagle here. This gun is not about
practicality, or reasonableness. [laugh] It's for FUN. [smile]
