Gun Safes

Does anyone here have any experience with the Tractor Supply Cannon safes?

I picked up a Cannon 24-gun safe, for $549. Tractor Supply does offer some hefty Black Friday discounts on these, but I didn't wait. In MA, gun safes & trigger locks are exempt from sales tax. No problem at Tractor Suppply, as no tax was added during the sales transaction. There is no shipping charge for items on the floor. The safe was bolted to a pallet. Tractory Supply forked it into the back of my truck, and I had the safe in place at home within 10 minutes, with no assistance.

The one small issue with this safe is the that the rests for long guns are too high for black rifles, and the bracketry for the shelves does not run low enough to add a shelf underneath them. It should be no problem to add a bracket to support a shelf, in order to raise the black rifles so they can meet the rests. Compared to some other safes in this price range, this safe has plenty of room above the long guns to store handguns.

I have the same one, bought it a little over a year ago. Did yours come with the door organizer? I was just at the Tractor Supply where I bought mine and now see that they come with it. I wish I had it but don't feel like paying the $90 or so from Cabelas. I just put a couple of ammo cans under my black rifles to raise them up to hit the rests. Overall not bad for what I paid for it, on sale for $499.

Yes, it's got the door organizer attached. And the lock is a Securam.

My first 91006 HF safe came via FedEx with a badly mangled chrome (or whatever) plated handle. So badly, in fact, that I cut my finger when trying to use it and not noticing the burrs. Interestingly, the plastic bevel was intact but the cardboard box took quite a bit of beating. Some dents on the side walls as well. I replaced the safe at a local HF store, the same day, with a more decent one.

I will certainly underatke the lock replacement project if no welding is involved. Last time I welded anything was more than 20 years ago.

Please keep us posted on your lock project progress if you have time...

Thanks.

Took the door off, removed the lock and related parts, and removed the boltworks. All three bolt pieces are bent incorrectly, so I'm straightening them. Figure out where I will mount the lock. Need to make up the plate I'll weld to the front of the door to cover the existing holes; I have the plate on hand. Playing with the idea of an internal hard plate and remote, glass-plate re-locker.

Thank you.

So, you do need to weld a plate in to cover existing holes. Probably, you will need to install some screw posts to mount the lock mechanism as well I'd think.

Screw posts - that depends. The Sargent and Greenleaf lock can be attached directly to the inside of the safe door with the supplied screws, as long as the holes don't puncture the door. The geometry of the engagement of the lock bolt with the boltworks depends on how you decide to do it. It will likely require at least welding a tab onto the existing bolt hardware.

I have the liberty Fat Boy JR 48 gun safe I love mine bought from Lowe's online $1097 plus $65 for shipping they delivered into the garage they did a great job.

Patriot Gun Safes

Does anyone have experience with Patriot Gun Safes? They look to have a nice safe and they are "on sale" and in stock. Thoughts?

Hey guys, I already have this safe. I keep important documents in it and was wondering If you guys think it will be ok to also store two hand guns in it. Does anyone else use this safe? I have plenty of room left in it for the guns so it would suck to have to get another safe just for them. TIA.

That appears to be the type of safe with a moisture laden layer of fire insulation. If this is the case, it is a bad idea to use it for gun storage.

I don't know if it does or not, it just looks like the inside of a regular safe to me. I do keep silica gel packs inside though to fight moisture.

Here's a video showing abit more detail of the inside: 2096df-bd.mpg - YouTube

I'm looking to get a small handgun safe, just so many to choose from so wanted to ask u guys for some opinions/recommendations for a reliable easy access small handgun safe

I bought a Fort Knox pistol box at Eastern Safe in Mendon. Not cheap but very strong.

are they 5 digit combos? I been looking at the gunvault, I like the idea of the bio thermal just not sure how reliable they are. how will they work if your hands are dirty?

It has a simplex lock with 5 push buttons. You set the combo and sequence and each button can be used just once. You don't have to use all 5 and you can even require 2 to be pushed at the same time. If you make a mistake you can also immediately clear by turning a knob.
It doesn't take the place of a good full size safe but for example, in a bedroom it allows secure storage and quick access.

go to 22:40 and see the fort know pistol box.

One thing to keep in mind is that you should not leave your gun in that box while a "curious mind" stays home and you're not around. One can open it by simply trying all possible combination in much less then an hour. And to make it easier, the list of all combinations is availible on the Net.

Ya that's what I was concerned about

The simplex lock is great for meeting "secure storage" laws for a bedroom gun, but not something to trust your kid's life to. Total combinations, not including undocumented half-press mode, is IIRC 1821.

Like I wrote, doesn't take the place of a safe but much better than leaving your firearm on the nightstand in the bedroom and as far as pistol boxes go, IMO, the best I've seen.

so the simplex you guys are talking about doesn't have a 3 wrong entries and it locks out type feature, you can just clear it and keep trying...correct?

Correct. The simplex is mechanical. The feature of which you speak is more commonly found on electronics locks.

I'm going to be doing this, what did you do for the height between shelves?

I bought some metel shelving stock from home depot and then the hooks that go into the holes for any height. cut some wood and bought some wool fabric and spray glued it to the wood, worked out great. send me an email and i will try to send you the pic, i cant upload them here.
