I'm not a metalworker so don't know how to begin but I want to attach a small handgun safe to the inside of the trunk. Am I better off going and having it professionally done? What type of company might do a small job like that?

Appreciate the help

Most any mechanic would probably do it for you. If not surely a body shop would.

Overall it's not that difficult of a job. It would require drilling some holes, and using Carriage bolts (rounded over top with no place for a wrench to fit on) to run from under the trunk, to inside the safe where you would put the bolts on. You just have to make sure of what you are drilling into, check for obstructions on the bottom of the car, mainly your gas tank, but also for mounting brackets, wire harness, and the cars frame itself. Though mounting it to the frame wouldn't be a bad thing, just getting the bolts into the frame rails might be difficult.

The only thing with carriage bolts though, is that they have a square section, just below the head so that they fit into a square hole and hold themselves firmly while being tightened. So, after you drill the holes, you may want to square them off a little with a file.

I would also put a drop of something like JB Weld on the top of the nut once it's tightened. That way it can't be taken off.

The weak point is usually the sheetmetal. You usually need to reinforce the hole with large washers (called Fender Washers) or a piece of steel plate.

Another great way is to drill small holes and then weld the reinforcement plate to the strong box through the holes No bolts to undo, and no loss of space in the strongbox. You can even use the holes to run a light into the box.

Frankly, in the trunk is usually not a great idea. Too much space to insert a pry bar. I prefer to install the strongbox in a location that the content of the vehicle makes it hard to access. Like under a seat where the seat has to be removed to get the box in or out. There are even some replacements or inserts for consoles and glove boxes that allow the factory door to be used as concealment.

I even saw an in-dash DIN size strongbox with a fake radio as the front panel. You tapped in the 'code' on the preset buttons to open. Little small for a full size pistol, but such stuff exists.

Chris, do you have a safe in each of your cars or just the one you use the most?
