We have everything that one could possibly need right here in this country. I'll never leave her. OK, maybe Montreal is a possibility.

I've been in Jo'burg at night... Good luck with that.

I've never been, I have friends on the continent I was considering visiting, so I started researching the laws, and they didn't look to promising. Any exciting stories to share jdubois? [smile]

And Depicts, I double checked and both links worked for me, do you have Adobe Acrobat Reader?

Gun free zones put limits on the amount of guns being carried around

Gun free zones limit the number of legal guns. Criminals may proceed to break the law at their own discretion. There! Fixed it for ya.

It just kills me, I mean how can one logically think that someone would break countless laws to obtain and carry an illegal firearm, but disobeying a stupid paper sign is simply UNTHINKABLE in their eyes.

Are people actually dumb enough to think that has any chance of working? That pamphlet almost seems comical except that it's going to get innocent people killed.

These made me laugh out loud when I read them. (The second one may take longer to load). It's gun free zone pamphlets and signs from a group called Gun Free South Africa.

My personal favorite is: "(gun free zones) ...restrict criminals from carrying their guns freely, which reduces intimidation and crime."

Are there any Free Gun zones around? Now THATS a zone I'd like to visit.

It's got to be satire right? I know SA has a horrible crime rate, but please don't tell me people can be so dumb as a believe that? (I know, I do know the answer to that).

No, thankfully not. The hotels I've stayed at don't let you go out at night without an escort, and they do a good job of keeping your nose clean. They also have a gun, which I'm not allowed to have as an alien. All the nice restaurants also typically have an armed guard outside.

Anyway, I hate cities and Jo'burg is certainly no exception, so I don't tend to hang around. I'm much more comfortable out in the bush with the animals. This is the Africa I love (and these suckers are tasty as hell too):

I had a friend in grad school from Jo'burg. He said if you live there and don't have a gun you're begging to be a victim.

A friend of mine told me he finally decided the handgun wasn't enough to get to work with and that he needed a shotgun in the car as well. That's when he decided to get out. He lives over here now.

I'd love to see the statistics of crimes in "gun free" zones vs non "gun free" zones.

At what point might it dawn on people that advertising the fact that you have niether the means nor the will to protect yourself actually invites trouble?

But, I suppose that is only some sort of right of passage to be held up in high esteem in the cult of victimhood..

I've never had Gembok. I have tried Inyala at the Hluhluwe Game Reserve in Natal and that was very tasty.

alright let me get a bunch printed off.
for now on, if anyone asks the car shoot is in south africa and not western MA.

Dont go to parties with metal detectors.
Sure, It may feel safe inside,
But what about all those niggaz waitin outside with guns,

I've never even heard of a restauraunt in the USA that posts visibly armed guards outside for your dining pleasure.

A few years ago I was in Brazil, the firearms homicide capital of the world IIRC, and everywhere you went you saw gangs or cops, but there weren't private guards for anything. That's wild.

Gun free zones are about as effective as restraining orders. They are just a piece of paper and nothing more.

Just another way of making things more "difficult" or, IMO, harassment.

One of my local dealers is in proximity to a school. No firearm, of any type, can leave the store without being in a locked container. All his slips are stamped as such. This is by Federal Reg.

Think about it...you leave the store and have evil in your mind. You go out to your vehicle, unlock the carrier, load the firearm, and go on your way to do whatever. It is idiotic. The only reason I can see for this Reg. is either "feel good" or "make things more diffiicult". In terms of the real world and commen sense...it is nonsensical.

Grin, of course dealers do not complain about it. They are selling more cases and locks than they ever dreamed of, and simply point to the Reg. when you are ready to leave the store. The whole thing is absolutely stupid. (IMHO)

They were doing it in Windhoek, Namibia as well. Though they seemed to be absent in Cape Town for some reason. The funnest part is that I found the fancier the restaurant, the fancier the uniform and gun! At one particularly fancy place we went, a castle built by some old German guy, they were carrying nice M14's in white gloved hands, all polished and pretty.

Zimbabwe was the craziest. They had 12 year olds running around with AK's. At one point a small child, couldn't have been more than 8, walked into the middle of the road ahead of us waving a white flag and crying for help. Our driver just swirved off the road to get around him, then back on the road and carried on. I asked him why he didn't stop to help the kid, and he said, "you wanna be robbed at gunpoint?" I said, "no." and he said, "Me neither."

In Brazil we were told that the cops provided their own guns, and in one open-air market I saw an unlikely pair of cops. One was about 6'4", look like a steroid freak or something, a HUGE guy, with a tiny little junk pistol on his belt, and his partner was about 5'4", 150 pounds, with some giant revolver with at least an 8 inch barrel on it.

It really opened my eyes to see how people in other parts of the world live, where you pay in advance for treatment in a hospital and stuff like that.

Another not-so-funny funny thing I remember...when we were there, there was a common type of crime in the area. Criminals would take the phone book and call every house on the street in the daytime, and if no one answered the phone at an address, they'd go to the house with a big truck and steal everything that wasn't tied down. So everyone in the neighborhood hired a housekeeper whose most important job was picking up the phone and saying "Oy" to prevent a home invasion.

But one thing I will say, some of the best sleep I have ever had was in a hammock on a houseboat on the Amazon River, 3 days boat ride from the nearest civilization, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle at night.

Travelling can be very fun.

its good to know there are other people here whove been to the 3rd world.
you dont know peace till youve had suffering!
real eye opener
