Guide to gun rights in your Massachusetts town

Springfield's incoming police commissioner said tonight that he will continue the practice of previous COPs and generally issue licenses restricted to target and hunting, although he said that he'll look at the studies concerning concealed carry. He stayed that lawfully licensed individuals have provided protection for criminals as one of his justifications for continued restriction of licensees.

What type of protection do lawfully licensed individuals provide to criminals? First they complain about people shooting criminals breaking into homes, now they complain about people protecting criminals? Goes to show that there is nothing that will make some people happy.

He was saying that criminals were paying or enlisting people who are able to lawfully get LTCs to provide protection for the criminals or their illegal activity. He also mentioned the possibility of increased threat to the responding officers in having more guns in the scene, implying that there would be more chaos at the scene if the gang-bangers were not the only ones to have guns.

ETA: He also suggested that chemical spray was a better choice than firearms.

Did you suggest to him to go get ****ed?

Darn - the chief is right.... plenty of lawfully licensed individual DO provide protection to criminals.

Regarding status in Chelsea:

Was issued a LTC-A in 6.5 weeks with "Restrictions: Hunting & Target" and was told if I had no infractions in 1 year to call the licensing officer and he would remove my restrictions, no questions asked.

Uxbridge is still very much green. They are great to deal with and extremely fast.

2/22 – Dropped off renewal application (only the application, nothing else; all lawful purposes for reason requesting).

2/22 – Officer Morrissette called me later that day to make appointment for me to come in.

2/23 – Went to PD. Took a new picture and gave payment (less than 5 minutes).

3/17 - Received a call that the new LTC was in. No restrictions, as usual.

Truly a great department.

Does anyone know Bridgewater's current status? Are they still Black? I am looking to buy a house soon and move out of my red town and into a town that will give me an unrestricted license come renewal time (I have had my LTC for about two and a half years now). I certainly do not want to renew and get myself downgraded to a class B.

What about Raynham? Anyone know how they are with LTCs?

Thanks for any info!

Bridgewater is green.

Boxford:

3/20/14- Dropped off application.
4/01/14- Received call for interview appointment.
4/04/14- Interview with Chief Murphy.
4/25/14- Received call, picked up brand-new unrestricted LTC/A.

Very pleasant experience at every turn.

Somerville:

3/31/14 dropped off application and met with Captain Stephen Carrabino
4/25/14 Received my brand new unrestriced LTC/A in the mail

The Captain seemed like a cool guy from what i gathered during my interview He dosent belive in restrictions and as long as your background check is clean you are good to go. At the moment Somerville has an interm chief of police so im not sure if this is the norm

Seems like some towns in MA are pushing things through fast.

My wife's girlfriend and her fiance just got their LTC's out of Beverly, no restrictions. Turn around time 3.5 weeks.

Why do I fear we will face the monumental delays of 2012-13 in 2018-19, when the bulk of LTC holders renew??? Unfortunately I am one of them.

Well Finally got my unrestricted License to carry after having a license to carry in Hudson mass for 35 Years.I am sure it would have been a little sooner if i had asked when the new chief of police took over. But it is my renewal time and i finally got it unrestricted. That was the reason i also put on the application (restricted for 35 years) And would the chief please consider i have a unrestricted license now ! I really think they even thought is was funny. All this aside i think a lot more towns are issuing them unrestricted now because some chiefs are being taken in to court for show cause hearings. They must have come to the conclusion who needs the extra hassle. Any way thank you chief Stevens and its great to see the Hudson PD gun friendly now.

Family member go in to Canton yesterday to renew from a Class B to hopefully ALP Class A. Will document process.

Anyone know if i could get Lowell to expire my license early so that I can reapply in Chelmsford? Chelmsford's chief won't overrule another chief's decision on restrictions and I don't want to wait 6 years

Well you are suppose to hold the license in the town you live in.So if the case is your in another town now? Than you can do it You just need to pay another $100 is about it.

This is NOT correct. I'm sure LenS or one of the more knowledgeable people on the forum will chime in soon, but your license is controlled by the issuing town until it expires. Some towns will early expire licenses, but some towns won't. If you get a restricted license, as I did, you could very well be stuck with it for the full 6 years no matter how green the town you move to is.

Yes you can! As long as you now live in Chelmsford. The problem lies, is that there is nothing saying that Lowell HAS to expire your license early. It is entirely the chiefs decision to do so. Good luck!

yup, if you can get Lowell to agree to it, they CAN do it. Will they? only one way to ask.

Now, if they do, you will have a short time frame with no LTC. I would suggest planning appropriately for that "gap"
