I like Vote Smart, it is helpful, however it doesn't tell the full story of a candidates or elected officials voting position.
In my experience, I've found that going to the actual candidates website is more informative.
One website I find invaluable is http://thomas.loc.gov
It offers some insight in the way of an elected officials positions (you can check on a Congress Critters voting record and bill sponsorship), but it's real value is in knowing and keeping up to date with legislation that is being proposed in Washington DC.
