Going to start this because I signed up for Night Op class, and I want to see some rifles set up for shooting the class. I know one of the other threads turned into something like this but here’s a titled one.
Eotech -T2 - magnifier- T2@45 ?
What works best for a dedicated set up to shoot your first class?

What did you bring or wish you had?

Feel free to let the thread morph into cheat codes for the other classes- lodging - chow etc

Knee and elbow pads. Bring em. Bring two. By noon on Sunday without knee pads, you may die.

Shooting mat and rear bag.

Tall enough bipod . 6-9 is not enough leg to engage 550 yards without a block of wood

Small pack to carry gear and ammo from parking down to the range

If you’re on the fence about going to Mil from MOA, jump over.

Good laser rangefinder

Camp chair for lunch time - though the classroom is done now.

Little outdated by now but still useful info.

After Action Report: Ridgeline Scoped Carbine May 29th & 30th 2021

IMG_2674.jpeg
This is my current set up used for a recent combative carbine. Removed the angled foregrip.

Bring your cleaning kit if you’re running suppressed. My rifle bogged down at the end of day one. I used EWG to lube the internals (grease), but I’ve started to only use slip2000. Haven’t shot the same volume since but time will tell.
If you go to their longer classes (more than two days) I would strongly consider a flow through can and see if that takes longer to build up carbon in the receiver.

Were you running a gas busting charging handle? Just curious.

Also seems like a piston upper might be a consideration.

A raincoat.

I personally prefer T2's to eotech, one, they're simply better, but mainly the micro obscures much less of your vision when shooting through nvgs.

I did the night operator course last spring.

Have a good IR laser - you won't be using passive that much... one of the key takeaways for me is how accurate you can be with active systems. lots of guys with dual tube set ups and chi chi gear - it was impressive.

The only time shot active very much was with the pistol using the NV setting on the ACRO P-2

probably one of the more useful courses I have taken - the instructors knew their business.

What IR is that?

I’m starting to look into which one to get.

Are lasers pointless if both sides are running nods?
you wouldn't go active (using IR illumination and/or IR laser) in that scenario. Current doctrine is once the party starts, you go active/visible in most scenarios. Everyone has NODs now - plan accordingly...

If I were to start over I'd go Dbal D2 on the secondary market for around $1200 or so. That way you can sell it once you know what you like/don't like for minimal to no loss. It's a heavy ass 12.5 oz LAM sitting at the end of your rifle but the performance is as good as it gets for the price point. As point of reference, I'm running the US Nightvision IR-V that weighs 6.3 oz but it's in the $1800-$2000 price point. The MAWL C1+, considered by many as one of the best readily available civilian powered LAM, is $2800 used and $3600 new.

If you have time, I'd wait and see what happens with the Phantom Hill CTF 2. They stopped producing LAMs but it looks like the brand/tech/rights were just acquired by someone else who is relaunching it. A lot of people like it but there wasn't nearly enough production to meet demand. I think it's priced around $1400 new.

If you're planning on being indoors or in thick woods some sort of ir illum is pretty necessary. I do a ton of passive stuff out here but im in the desert or the city with a lot of ambient light. In true dark you're gonna want a good source of illum.

I hate the controls, ergos, weight, pretty much everything about the mawl but it is the best civi available laser/illum.

Full power peqs are cheaper and readily available. The illum kinda sucks, not as clean as a mawl.

NGALs are sweet, but pricey.

No personal experience with the raid.

If you're doing it "cheap" get a peq15, dbal, or even a steiner otal laser and pair it with a surefire vampire.

On my spr i dont use a laser at all, i shoot passive through an rmr, i have an x300 for white light and toss a be meyers kiji illum head in it for really good ir illum and honestly im plenty useful with that setup considering its an spr not a dedicated cqb night fighter rig.

Good info, thanks. I have time not doing the night ops course still next year and still gotta get the NODS.

I havent tried so cant confirm if the lasers would make it:

Price wise its not really worth the risk either imo

A lot of guys gave had stuff seized by customs especially since the ukraine shit kicked off.

You'd honestly probably have better luck buying bsttlefield pickups out of ukraine but i wouldnt trust them to not rip you off and im sure both governments are doing all they can to shut that down.

It depends.

If you’re in a building, it’s not as much of a concern. But still need to think of light discipline.

If you’re outside, how dusty is it? You’re not going to see the full beam by default, it needs particulates in the air, just like a visible spectrum laser. If the air is clear and both you and your target have restricted angles of visibility, it should be okay.

That said, with the prevalence of nods, you need to be much more judicious in your emissions within the NIR/SWIR portion of the EM spectrum. Bursts of emission are a lot better than keeping it on. Not just lasers but also things like strobes or chemlights.

Hell, nevermind nowadays, back in 2008 we had a team take accurate fire at night from insurgents after they used their IR lasers from their OP.

Till China activates them mossad style and all your shit blows up.
yeah - I had a long time prohibition against chinesium stuff... that said, I have compared the "good" version of china NGAL against the real thing - most couldn't tell the difference. hell, I finally broke down and picked up an iray RH-25 for larping around. I won't larp after the ballon goes up an the 5G signal goes out and everything destructs...
