    Dear General Motors and Chevrolet,

You suck. You really, really, really suck. You’re an organization that claims “Buy American” while treating your customers like crap.

You see my son bought a Chevy Colorado brand new at the end of 2017. It was a reward to himself for some major life accomplishments. He deserves better treatment than this.

After finishing college in 2015 he chose to serve his country. He joined the Army and went through 2 ½ years of some of the most challenging training the Army has to offer. And he completed all successfully. At a time when many of his peers were rightfully enjoying the fruits of their college efforts my son chose instead to join the Army. And this truck was something he cherished as a reward for pushing through.

In August of 2018 his new trucks began having issues and he brought it to Mirak Chevy for service on September 6th. That’s the last time he had use of the vehicle. After multiple attempts at repairs, and sending the truck out to an outside transmission specialist, the truck was deemed not repairable. Yes, those are the dealer’s words on the paperwork he has.

In mid October my son began a Massachusetts Lemon Law case with the BBB who handles such matters for the state of MA. It’s a long, laborious process whereby the BBB attempts to settle the case in lieu of court action. His new truck easily fit all the parameters of a Lemon and seemed like a slam dunk. Remember, the truck was deemed not safe to drive and the dealer fully admits that the problems still exist after all their efforts.

The BBB finally set an arbitration date for a day in mid December and as they BBB predicted, GM settled about 12 hours before the hearing was to take place. In reality GM continues to screw with my son and stretch things out as long as possible.

GM did offer my son the right to trade in his car for any GM car on the lot at MSRP. Not only was it not a fair financial deal, quite frankly who would want to purchase another vehicle from a company that treats their clients this way?

After a bit of back and forth they reached a settlement just before Christmas. And GM has mostly gone radio silent on the matter now. They haven’t budged.

Well, actually one thing did happen. The dealer, Mirak Chevy, required my son to return the loaner and remove his truck from their lot. Yes, they required him to drive away in the truck that they deemed unsafe to drive. And now he’s still paying monthly payments on the truck and insurance, but has no transportation.

We engaged with a local consumer reporter who reached out to GM a week ago. My son received exactly one phone call from a “GM Executive Resolution” department and is still waiting for their response. However the woman he dealt with made sure to offer all sorts of “I don’t know what I can do” types of answers, and could not give him any firm information on when they’d buy his truck back, as they agreed to do. They provide lip service but no resolution.

I write all this because I am PISSED. I am pissed that my son is being taken advantage of by a giant corporation who does not give a shit for their customers. I am pissed because their are stretching out their obligations to my son, hoping he’ll accept something less than he’s entitled to. I am pissed that a company who just told the world about a great financial quarter and strong expected business in the next year won’t do right by a fine young man who made the mistake of buying one of their products.

Oh, and by the way, there's a class action suit against GM for transmissions on this truck. It's an identified issue. But they drag their feet and causing pain to those who trusted them most.

My message is simple. If you care to please SHARE this message and tell your family and friends how GM/Chevy treats their customers. Spread the word that they are truly dishonorable people who don’t give a damn about the suffering they are causing my son. And tell the world that GM/Chevy insisted a young man drive away in a car their own paperwork declares it is not safe to drive.

    Yeah, I am really PISSED!!!

does she still do this? Get it into the media. Big corporations picking on a service member...won't be received very well.

Is/was the truck under warranty? I purchased a new Colorado in Nov 2018 from Colonial Chevy here in Acton. At 3000 mi it needed a torque converter. Seems that this is a common problem with the Colorado and other models that have the 8 speed tranny. The dealer ordered the parts and when they came in they delivered a loaner to me and picked up the truck. Two days later they delivered the truck and picked up the loaner. Can't complain about that service. I'm beginning to think that the dealer makes or breaks the whole deal. At least that's the way it was in my case. Jack.

$7.95/month is well worth the headaches of not knowing what you're buying. A little research goes a long way.

Is it shitty that they aren't making it right? Absolutely. But while I've never even considered buying a mid size truck, I knew they had tranny issues and I'm no mechanic or car guy.

If you say the settlement happened mid December then I wouldn’t even expect to made whole till about mid February. I have a close friend that lemoned a vw gti and it was about 60days from the settlement date. Unfortunately your story is about par for the course for any manufacturer.

How is it possible they can't fix a transmission? Did they try just replacing the whole thing? That should work unless they don't make a good transmission thus making it pointless.

My dad had a Pontiac that he bought used and the transmission went with a month left on the warrranty. GM would not allow the dealer to put in a reman. They required that the dealer do the rebuild. This is a few years back. The dealer did a good job.

They don’t have parts/programming/know how to fix it.
Sort of like the Toyota Frame recall.
Early tocoma got the big trade in deal and the rest had to leave trucks with dealer for months waiting for frames.

Acton Toyota handled my frame recall all well. It surprises me if a dealer can't figure out how to replace a tranny.

Most Dealers don't do extensive transmission work. They send them out.

If I trusted GM at all, I'd not now. But I don't trust GM. So no big surprise.

The Colorado/Canyon is the best advertisement for a Tacoma. That said, I’m happy with my Silverado. Like what was said above, the dealer makes the difference in how hard they push the manufacturer to make a customer happy.

Did you post this on the Chevy FB page? And in Chevy and Colorado fan forums? That will get you some real traction.

I’m sorry for your sons problems. The dealer and General Motors are both screwing with you big time as you already know. Your sons truck is a machine, machines can be fixed, there’s no such thing as a non-repairable machine, unless it’s had an encounter with a couple of bricks of C4.

That sucks - I’ve driven GM for decades but I think my current truck is the last - I’ve heard too many stories like this. I think it’s post bankruptcy/reorganization that is the issue,

    My 2011 has 122K+mi btw

I challenge the board to come up with other venues to get a resolution for Richc son. Are there any local reporters doing the consumer fairness beat these days? Are there military vet channels that this should be promoted on? I'd certainly check with the Globe and Herald to see if this story is of interest to them.

Blatant lies.... So say all the GM fan-boys on the Toyota thread... [thinking][thinking][thinking][thinking] But you know Tacoma frames - (made by Dana who also make frames for GM) rotted out. So that means ALL Toyotas junk... So don't go buy a vehicle like a Toyota that runs for 300K without major problems if maintained.

You don't want a vehicle from a company that stands behind their product - like doing a 15,000 dollar frame replacement on their vehicles free of charge to the owner.

That said I hope they make it right... But I don't expect them to. This is par for the course with GM.

Yes, brand new. Warranty work started after 8 months of ownership or so.

So a dealer can sell me a car, collect my money and get me on the road in a day or less. Or they can buy a car from me on the spot and write a check.

But it takes the dealer and GM 4-5 months to buy back a car they've determined can't be fixed or driven.

    Where's the logic in that?
