Father accidentally kills himself in front of children at grocery store

SPOTSYLVANIA COUNTY, VA (WTVR) - A father accidentally shot and killed himself at the grocery store Sunday evening, according to the Spotsylvania County Sheriff's Office.

investigation indicated when the man tried to unbuckle his seat belt, he hit the trigger of his .40 caliber glock and shot himself in the hip.

It is unclear whether the man carried his gun in a holster or his pocket. The family friend says it likely was loose in his pocket. It has also not been determined whether the man was a licensed gun owner, however his wife indicated to investigators she knew he carried a weapon with him from time to time, said Capt. Scott.

"If you're going to carry a concealed weapon, put it in a reputable holster," Capt. Scott said when asked about general gun safety tips.

Unfortunate, but even a cheap pocket sleeve could have saved his kids the horror of watching their dad bleed out. That femural artery is a bad spot to get shot/cut, once it's severed it retracts and is near impossible to reach in and pinch off. I recall a story about a guy in a home depot bleeding out because he had an open box cuter in his pocket that caught him their when he bent over.

Guess we have the wait and see what the real story is...my heart does go out to this family....[sad2] That said if it is found he did not have the proper carry rig, he has no one to blame but himself...curel comment i know but it is a true statment....[banghead] he then unfortunatly becomes a knuckle head at the cost of his family loosing a father and husband...[rolleyes]

I'm glad this mouth-breather killed himself, he can stop eating my food, breathing my air.

You don't need to take any 'required' safety courses when you buy a gun, you just have to have the common sense not to carry a loaded weapon on your hip without enabling the safety.

For added measure, you can remove the clip and carry it separate. Should a situation arise, you can slam the clip into the gun and chamber a round in less than a second.

Well, sounds like this expert has all the answers...

But the next two commentors smacked him down:

I agree that this guy made a MASSIVE mistake, and payed for it, but first of all:

The weapon in question is a Glock. Glock pistols don't have any kind of safety. I also own a Glock, though a different caliber.

Second: I don't know any modern hangun (any ever, actually) that uses a "clip". The proper term is "magazine".

Third: There is absolutely NO POINT in carrying a firearm, if the weapon is not loaded and chambered. That "less than a second" is GREATLY exaggerated, It would take the vast majority of gun owners upwards of 5 seconds to realize the situation, draw their weapon, locate/retrieve/load the ammo, and then chamber the weapon.....ALL while staying focused on the threat.

Who are you to judge anyone? This man who made a mistake and paid the ultimate price, has small children.....what a shame for his family, and his children who witnessed this.

He probably didn't realize he "was EATING YOUR FOOD" or "BREATHING YOU AIR"......

You talk about gun education, if YOU had any you would GLOCK'S HAVE NO SAFETY! Maybe you need a class or two...

Hopefully you'll choke on HIS AIR OR FOOD! Incompetent idiot!

Just read Kilo's response and AGREE COMPLETELY!!

Wow. That is horrible for his family. Even a cheapo Uncle Mike's would probably have prevented this if it was a pocket carry. Then again, maybe it was a cheap holter on the hip that didn't cover the trigger. Either way, it's such a basic step to get a decent holster. Sad.

Would tying off the leg with a belt or tie maybe stop the bleeding or is there really nothing you can do other than find a surgeon?

Very sad story

Sad story, I feel horrible that his children had to witness that.

Side note. What's with all the "glocks don't have safeties" talk in the comment section?

If the bullet hit one of the major arteries (eg, femoral) then he's pretty much toast unless he happens to do it in front of a trauma center. I'm no MD by any stretch of the imagination, but I would guess that it's really hard to stop the blood from gushing out of an artery like that, particularly if it's in a place where the blood flow can't be choked off easily. This guy probably hit the backwards powerball in addition to being dumb. If the bullet hit him an inch off from where it did, he probably would have survived. If I was going to make a WAG he had no holster of any kind... AND probably had junk in his pocket to boot, and a key or something got inside the trigger guard... and you can guess what happened from there.

I have to give props to the Captain here, at least she said "Use a holster" instead of uttering some claptrap like "Leave carrying guns to professionals" .

Even a crappy holster is FAR better than nothing. It also has side benefits for the OTHER kind of gun safety. A gun loose in a pocket will frequently contort itself into a position where it might not be easily retrieved in an emergency situation, for example. Say the thing rolls around in his pocket and becomes upside down or muzzle pointing up.... he's never going to be able to grab the gun to defend himself with it.

This is a clear example of a case where a guy would have been better off carrying a rock or a can of OC in his pocket than a firearm. .

Pretty sad.

But the real root cause is the femoral artery. The government should pass legislation to ban femoral arteries or at the very least, ban shooting yourself accidentally in the femoral artery. That should do it yes sir.

This tragedy could have been averted if the .gov didn't mandate use of seatbelts.

Poor bastard, what a way to go. He bleed out quickly I am sure. It's why I keep a kit when I travel, (edit: with the training and knowledge to use it). Knowledge, the Anti-Troll. A tourniquet may have added enough pressure to keep him alive until ALS could get to him.

The solution to this isn't to carry a med kit. The solution is to carry in a holster so you don't shoot yourself in the first place.

I agree, first measure is safety, using the right carry method, etc, second would be to fix someones mistake. I didn't think to mention using a holster as it's common sense to me.
