Some years ago, I picked up some 173 grain .30 cal FMJ NM heads from the DCM. I am having trouble finding load data. Is it safe to use data for the 168 grain head in the M1 rifle?

I think either one would do fine.
If you look around you can find the load data for LC NM loads.
Try to find the US army TM for small arms ammuntion.
Of course powder has changed since then.
I personally load on the lower end of the data. Since i shoot at 200 yards max 99% of the time.

My 30.06 MATCH I have pulled down had 46 grains of 4895 in it. I dropped the charge (via testing) to 43.3 and it shot much smaller groups at 300 yards. Don't know if it will work the op on a M1 but would give it a try. Stay off the hot loads as they tended to bed op rods. When they went to 7.62 ammo the op rods quit bending on the Navy Match Rifles.
