So I've been looking at glocks for a few months now, and finally purchased a new gen 4 glock. Now, an employee at one of the stores I frequent told me that old preban magazines would not work in the new gen 4 glocks. I dont have any to test this, but as far as I can tell it seems to be that the only way they wouldn't work is if the magazine catch was reversed for a left handed shooter. Does anyone have any experience with using the preban 15-17 round mags in a 4th gen? Thanks!

This is from a post on CAL guns. I did a Google search. YMMV

--------------

Primarily Glock magazine compatibility is dependent on the type of magazine release that is on the Glock.

Glocks with the standard magazine release can use all generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the ambi-magazine release can only use the newer generation of Glock magazines, the ones with the mag release cut on the front of the magazine.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set up on the standard side can use all generations of Glock magazines.

Glocks with the reversable magazine release set up on the non-standard side can only use the newest generation of Glock magazines, the ones with the mag release cut on the right side of the magazine.

Saw the same question on the NEW FB group. They work just fine, the only exception being the one you mention. I don't think I've ever had a malfunction in the Gen4 over 3-4 years and thousands of rounds. I'm a lefty, so I really wish I could flip the mag release and use post-bans.

I have a Gen 4 34 and a Gen 4 26. I have some very old pre-ban u-notch mags and some newer Gen3 square notch pre-ban mags as well as some new Gen 4 10 round ambi-cut mags. They all work great, but I'm not a lefty. I did have to switch out followers on my older mags in order for it to lockback on empty.

I can only speak specifically about 9mm glocks and the non metal lined U notch mags

In a 17 or 19 a gen 4 gun will experience feeding problems with U notch mag.

To fix the problem, purchase one of the latest followers (#6??) and a fresh mag spring.
I've tried Wolff mag springs as well as a spring from a new Gen4 standard capacity Glock mag and they both work fine.

Once these two changes are made the gun will run flawlessly. It will however NOT lock back on an empty mag.
For me that is fine. In fact, its preferable since I don't usually carry a spare mag and at least if the slide is forward, the gun will look functional even ifits empty.

Don

p.s. I'm left handed and see no point in ever reversing a glock mag release. I can reach it just as quickly with my middle finger as I can with my thumb.
