Gay Americans are arming themselves to stay alive

I don't really know what to make of that article. It claims NICS checks are up, but the NSSF source they cite says that adjusted NICS (NICS checks less those related to permit application/renewals) is down 8.5% from last year. Here's the NSSF source they link to in their article:
Proof - Subject

I may be a bit out of date. Seems the "Trump Slump" has been reversed by the fresh surge of panic buying in response to the series of school shootings and resulting calls for gun control.

They cited the FBI too... NICS Firearm Checks: Month/Year — FBI They mentioned the NSSF as an additional detail.

The important part:
The group produces their own analysis of the NICS numbers each month but notes that their numbers suffer from the same uncertainty affecting the FBI's underlying numbers.

"These statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through the NICS," the FBI wrote in its report on the NICS numbers. "They do not represent the number of firearms sold. Based on varying state laws and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale."

Gays seem to know how to drive an agenda, get political power, get on TV, look good, dress well, smell nice...all the things we gun rights people need...

Absolutely. The "regular" gun owner has been caricatured and demonized. Gun owner diversity is an absolute need in this current political environment to balance things out. And gays have made tremendous progress fighting for their rights in the last decade. Need to translate their efforts and success into gun rights advocacy. The more gays and people who will advocate for 2A rights the better.

Would love to see a gallery of "Fabulous guns". Not gay like featureless grips, Roni or Bodyguards though.

Liberals fear Trump is gonna kill all tehgheyz like Conservatives feared Obama had the votes to ban guns. (Sans gun tragedies - but even then he couldn't capitalize.)

On the flipside, I have clients that can't get where the alt-alt-right is coming form with their conspiracy theories. I point to things like this and Impeach Trump/Pence items. Just as crazy. "Oh no. That's sane." LOL

Not buying it. Gays have never been more accepted, more celebrated, to the point of being a favored and protected political class, this story is BS.
Glad to read that more people are arming themselves. The title and article seem to be overplaying the "risk" of being gay - as though some folks are out looking for gays to bash and kill. I don't doubt that gays get killed for their sexuality. I doubt that it happens with the frequency portrayed in the article.
I'm glad your experience can speak for the rest of us. Violence and crime are tied for the lowest rates in over a century - I guess we can all give up our guns, right?

Statistics can be used to tell any number of stories. At the end of the day, innocent victims don't deserve harm, regardless of why it comes to them; in turn, we all deserve to prepare and protect ourselves from it. Stories like the OP help us as shooters grow our ranks. If calling it propaganda helps you sleep at night, go with that; but know that I'm teaching new shooters, and expanding our numbers, while telling them what a mess our system is. And I have that opportunity in part because people have had a different life than you.

bet they don't have a NYC chapter.
Until recently, we did. But, owing in part to the difficulty in getting licensed there, it seems to be dormant. The nearest chapter (other than Boston) appears to be in upstate-NY.

They used to be very active in Ma. but about 10yrs ago the guy who was President in the area moved to TX. Haven't heard much from them since.
They have a Boston Chapter. Might be worthit to invite them to have a dedicated forum within this website, and maybe offer help with events / training / demos.

Diversity is always good.
We've been slowly rebuilding. Since shortly after Pulse, I've been hosting monthly meetups - brunch in Somerville, then range time at HSC. Turn-out has been growing, and support within the shooting community has been fantastic. Being able to share this helps our cause.

As an instructor, and the head of the Boston chapter, I regularly point folks to NES. Turns out our needs are basically the same as everyone else's, so I'm not sure how useful a subforum here would be. There already exists a dedicated forum at pinkpistols.org. Beyond that, our members post here, LGC, and on other forums.

That said, we have events regularly, and have happily accepted the help and company of members here, and look forward to doing so again in the future. Because yes, diversity is good. If people find it interesting, I could make a point of bumping the thread I started with our monthly scheduling info. If you want to be involved, let me know. Or feel free to just join us sometime - we only bite if you ask.

All good stuff. What staggers my imagination is that my liberal acquaintances and also two liberal brothers in law stoop to the low level of assuming that all gun owners and vehement 2a supporters are full on right wing on every issue including anti gay rights......they make these broad assumptions and don't even take the time to get to know any gun rights folks. I've found in my involvement in the gun rights community that the vast majority of "gun nuts" can be quite supportive of "rights" in general.........including the rights of people to marry who they want. Still trying to convince my brothers in law that I am not a republican..........its been 10 years now and they still don't believe me:cool:

I hear you, most of my liberal friends think that im a republican for owning a gun. They cant understand you can be other things than republican or democrat. I dont understand how some people want to dictate how others live their life...

Every time I get to tell my friends that I've had nothing but support from the shooting community, I smile a little extra because of the confusion on their faces. Guys like you makes living among (self-proclaimed) socialists way more fun for me.

Alinksy 101 with respect to gun owners being demonized.

The way our side can capitalize on the left's hierarchy of protected groups is to use the Pulse Nightclub shooting to prove that Dem pols and the media care about Muslims more than Gays. Their response to that attack was to further disarm citizens (including LGBT citizens)!

The Obama presidency was a gun and ammo buying frenzy fueled explicitly by the fear of the POTUS. I remember seeing those "Gun salesman of the year" posters with his face on them all over gun stores and gun forums.

Agreed, while some of that was fear of government tyranny, the main fear was loss of gun rights and the scramble to purchase in the hope we would be grandfathered in. This thread I believe if purely about their fear of Trump and his supporters tyranny.

Maybe we should take a hint from the late 60’s and put flowers in our barrels, oh if life was only unicorns and rainbows....

Just for the record im 100% for any and all legal gun ownership and personally walked about 4 gay people all the way through the process from start to finish and it was awesome. My comment is specifically referring to calling any gay or trans victim a hate crime and using that as a statistic, they did that with Mathew Shepherd didnt they and that was a lie, most of these crimes are committed by another LGBTQ person, like adding a Tsarnaev brother to the list of gun violence stats, the Dums would have you believe there are gangs of white Tea Partiers driving around killing these people while ignoring the knockout game.

around here (Boston) that is true. Go to the midwest.....and it will be a MUCH more unforgiving and downright violent reception. THAT is where self defensive handguns are really needed. Nothing makes someone more polite than when he notices you are carrying a handgun.

Good, the more the merrier.
Now wait till they found out how badly the liberals they have been voting for have f*cked up their ability to actually get one.
Like a said to a gay friend when he told me he was so happy he and his S.O. could get married.
That's great, now if things go south you can lose half your shit like the rest of us . Congrats [rofl]

It boggles my mind as to how anyone can't see the correlation between what's happening in the country right now and certain groups of people feeling the need for protection. It's no different than the right wing thinking Obama was going to 'grab all the guns'. Nevermind it was Trump who said "Take the guns first, go through due process second".

Noted white supremacist David Duke-"We are determined to take our country back,” Duke said from the rally, calling it a “turning point.” “We are going to fulfill the promises of Donald Trump. That’s what we believed in. That’s why we voted for Donald Trump, because he said he’s going to take our country back.”

Tiki torch marches in the streets? GTFO

It's not 1850, it's not 1950, it's 2018, and this crap, along with needing to stop, has emboldened many people, just as Obama did for the other side. Some wear pink pussy hats(can I say that?) others are carrying some pink, polymer, waistband equality.
We either embrace it as second amendment activists, or shut up about gun rights altogether. Simply because it doesn't fit your narrative doesn't mean it's not legitimate. So stop trying to argue pedantic points.
Eventually this shit is gonna stop. Because when it’s our turn, we won’t “make excuses for the terror.”-Marx

I've been saying that for years! "Gun owners need to come out of the Safe!"

25 years ago, if you were gay, you hid your predilection, unless you were among friends.

Sound familiar?

I fully support Gay Conservatism.
Gay Liberalism...
not so much.

Replace Gay with any other label and it remains the same...

I lost all my liberal friends, except for a few who are total fudds, when I chose not to be a victim and joined the gun culture.
I’m for everyone being “all in” when it comes to owning guns. Gays will experience another form of discrimination here in the People’s Republic when they try and buy stuff that is easily available in free states.

I'm Glaad they are exercising their rights, but would have a lot of Pride is the called their Demcrat friends of my ARs.

You left out the 52 gay people that were killed just for being gay. Which brings the total to 80 gay/trans killed in 2017.(according to the NY Post article)

That doesn't sound like a problem of 30 years ago, that sounds like a problem now.

That's 28 trans people dead by homicide in total. Again, including gang and drug activity, and domestic violence.

The "just for being gay" bit is open to debate, and should be met with some skepticism considering the "just for being trans" and "trans genocide" thing includes so many PSGWSP situations that very clearly aren't "just for being x" (not excusing the 1 or 2 "trans panic" murders each year - they are murders, but that's a pretty easy death to avoid). Conservative estimate is 12.5m gay people and 1.8m trans people, in a nation of a little over 320m. If we believe the inflated/likely-lies 80 people then you're talking about really low odds, and I see a lot of killings by parents, religious groups, gangs, and mean teenagers. Show me some data; if the threat is alt-right Trump supporters, it's bound to be there. And no weasel words or rat stats, thanks.

I guess when I'm at a mostly-gay casual bowling league and there's a previously quite calm trans woman now illegally concealing a no-joke sword and ranting because of "Trumpanzees and Alt-Rights" (asked to leave; refused to put the sword in her car - they do allow lawful concealed or open firearm/knife carry), and a previously intelligent and collected programmer who is living in fear of "Trump's gay internment camps" and is driving his husband nuts about moving to Canada, their well-paying jobs be damned, my first question is "Why do you believe this?" and if the answer is "The gay rights group told me so and the media did too" with literally zero data to back it up (other than the toothless gumflapping of some irrelevant 80s white nationalist, or an early 2000s Pence campaign site quote taken out of context), I say "**** that group".

Especially if such groups are the first to defend other groups/people/ideologies who HAVE actually executed mass shootings and murders of gay people "just for being gay" ala the Pulse night club or countries like Saudi, Qatar, the UAE, etc, and even celebrate Iran for their "progressive stance on transgenderism" as they horsewhip or kill men for kissing. You want to toss around the term "genocide" with regards to LGBT folks maybe look at Chechnya or Uganda, not the US. But instead it's a political drive for political organizations that have nothing to do with civil rights, unless it's restricting them for others. I just thought Pink Pistols was better than that based on my experiences with the Boston chapter.

I think there are a couple things going on here at the same time.

To start, I agree with your premise that a so-called "gay genocide" almost certainly doesn't exist. I want to be clear - I personally disagree vehemently with the concept of "hate speech/crime" laws. In the cases where these behaviors rise to the level of crime, we already have laws; and if you have enough information to prove motive, the act is probably foul enough that we have other modifiers to apply that have [more] objective standards of proof.

Next, the documentary in the article in the OP is written by an Australian, interviewing Californians. I'm not saying there's bias there...oh wait, I absolutely am. Just as there are crazy mouth-breathers on the right, there are also whackadoo neckbeards on the left. It turns out that stuff sells newspapers. And before we blame this on the millennials, yellow journalism dates to at least the 1920s. Hell, actual journalists were publishing stories about Spring-Heeled Jack in the late 19th, so we're well over a century of "fake news." None of this should be surprising.

I have the particular pleasure of spending most of my internet comms time here, while the majority of my meatspace existence is among educated Cantabrigians. This means that I get to hear about "Trumpettes" at least as often as "Snowflakes." Truth is, we are all blind to our own hypocrisy, and find it terribly hard to see the world outside our experience. Facebook and the spin of Fox/CNN/MSNBC/Breitbart etc. make it really easy for us all to create ideological echo chambers that reinforce our preconceived notions. The human animal wants to minimize effort in order to maximize the energy available for survival, so we create these shelters. There are very few of us who actually engage when those obviously misguided statements are being made.

Now, to the topic of the Pink Pistols specifically. The simple reality there is that, from a legal perspective, we don't exist. There is no monolithic Pink Pistols organization. We don't pay dues; we don't maintain membership rolls. We are a movement that holds a singular stance - all people are born with the right to protect themselves. We are centered inside the LGBTQ community because there is a history of violence in and against that community that we believe we can help minimize. While there is a person who holds the title "First Speaker" there is little she can do to affect the behavior of members elsewhere, and even less to control their messaging when they choose to take an interview.

I should be clear, while I hate the rhetoric and bombast that gives us the current state of political "discourse," I must reiterate - identity-based violence does exist. It doesn't always result in death, but then most violence doesn't. That doesn't change that I, and people I care about, have experienced harassment, assault, and physical attacks for the clothes we were wearing, the clubs we were leaving, and vocalized assumptions about who/what that made us. This includes here in Boston, in the 2000s, and specifically since the 2016 election.

None of this is Trump's fault, but explaining that requires getting people past the handwringing and into a place where they can feel safe having these conversations. It sounds like you're trying to do this with your friends; I'm doing it with mine. Let's not shoot the messenger here. In between the Aussie shenanigans is the good news - people in the queer community are getting armed. This means that - at least on this topic - they're breaking free of the issue-bundling that comes with the "two-party system." The best thing any of us can do is extend olive branches, and try to tear down some walls.

Maybe then we can "progress" towards actual freedom. You know, the laissez faire kind where we stay out of everyone else's business as long as they're not hurting anyone.

I post comments on the Globe after liberal articles by the anti-Trump/repressive writers and personal attacks by the snowflakes are quite revealing. Liberals are not the opened minded individuals they claim to be and WE, gun owning citizens of Ma. are hated and reviled by the Repressive liberals who run this poor excuse if a State in the Union. You're preaching to the choir here. Discrimination is not just practiced against minorities, even thou I guess we do qualify as a minority in the Peoples Republic.

My only issue is that they named their group "pink pistols" , your associating an effiminate color with being gay, should have named it something else that goes against everything they have been working for imo.

The name and logo are historic references. The Germans used color codes - the pink triangle was for homosexuals. The queer community has a history of "reclaiming" words and the like as an a way of flipping the bird. Of course, there's also nothing wrong with being effeminate, if that's what someone chooses.

But if you want to start a group of your own, feel free to call it whatever you prefer.
