The slang term for gun owners of what could be called limited tastes. They are thought of as being casual gun owners and not true supporters of the Second Amendment. These are the guys that Diane Feinstein is talking about when she talks about acceptable gun ownership.

Two characteristics normally identify a FUDD.

#1: Very limited range of shooting interests.
A FUDD could have just 1 gun, or more than 153 guns, but all those guns fall within a very limited range of interests. The interest that defines a FUDD is "sporting purposes". All their 12 ga wood and blued steel shotguns, bolt action rifles, 44 magnum revolvers, and 9mm pistols only have one purpose: sport. These guns are either for hunting, or they are for marksmanship and trap competitions. Nothing they have is supposed to take the role of a dedicated defense gun, or a daily carry gun. They wouldn't be caught dead with anything black polymer, tactical, or concealable. If you ask them why they own guns, the typical answer is for hunting or for sport. If you ask them about personal defense, expect either half-assed answer about a shotgun loaded with birdshot, or just calling the Police.

#2: Provincialism in applying the Second Amendment.
By the estimation of a FUDD, the Second Amendment exists to let him hunt deer, shoot quail, play trap, and punch targets. They will likely talk about how nobody needs an "assault weapon" or anything like that. FUDD type sentiment is what brought about the 1994 Assault Weapons Ban, as well as many other ultimately pointless laws. The FUDD does not care so long as they can keep their M1903a3 Springfield and their custom Beretta double-barreled shotgun. They are willing to sacrifice other sections of the gun community to save themselves.

Here's a fictional FUDD:

Name: Ed Mulder
Age: 53
Employment: Auto Mechanic
Guns: 3; 1 Mauser 98 sporter, 1 Remmington 870 shotgun, and 1 Ruger 10/22.
Why he owns guns: He likes the sport.
Reaction when offered an AR-15: Grimmace.
Stance on Second Amendment: Giving citizens the right to have guns, but allowing for certain types of dangerous guns, like handguns and semiautomatic rifles, to be regulated. All he cares is that he still gets to hunt and do shooting sports.

I consider any gun owning American who does not fully support the 2nd a FUDD. Either you believe our right to own firearm is inalienable or not. There is but this and except for that. I got banned form a group because a tool had told be that one of my ar's I was selling to another person was illegal as I live in Maine and so did the buyer and we where in a Maine group I called the hijacker a FUDD. His reply was "is that how you show respect for police officers?" I replied simply just because one has a badge does not give them ultimate wisdom and you are a FUDD..

Eddie nailed that one. I personally hate FUDDS and find them more dangerous than anti's give them more credence than they deserve. I got my hands on a old riverside arms 20 gauge, zinc parkerized it and stained the stock and forearm a dark ebony and I bring it to skeet shoots just to see the cringe. Lol, I can pick the FUDDS out a mile away.

Ur only a fudd if it has the ducks imo

I picked up a nice Ithaca model 37 made in 1952 off Gunbroker recently. I stole it at $185 shipped on the C&R. It has a duck scene engraved on one side and a pheasant scene on the other. It cycles and shoots like a dream. I love it. Guess I'm a FUDD. [wink]

I don't think you can define a FUDD as a person who only owns certain guns. Its the "bend over" attitude that defines them. When I was at the RI Senate hearings back in late April, a guy said "I own an AR, but I never use the 30 round magazines and I'm fine with 10 round magazines and common sense gun control." That man is a FUDD and everyone who was pro-gun in the room was giving him the death stare.

If you believe "shall not be infringed" means "shall not be infringed", I don't care if you like .38 snubbies, M1911s, shotguns with ducks or deer on the receiver, Mosins, or 10/22s. Just don't sell out.

I always thought I was a "Fudd" because I preferred lever actions over semi-autos or nice walnut over synthetics.

It is my unshakeable belief that my lever actions are just further down the gun-haters list and todays semi-auto ban will be tomorrows lever action ban.

I've already said that there will be no more bites from my elephant and I am just as determined to keep my Colt AR as I am my Winchester 73. Period.

Oh boy! [rolleyes] Go Green!

Most of the clowns at my club down the street are FUDDs. I've been asked "what do you hunt with that?" when I was carrying my AR. Because they do FUDD sports almost everyday, which closes the rifle range, I only use the pistol range.
