I just passed the technition test yesterday. I have a Yeasu ft 2800m. I don't know very much about the hobby. Is this a good radio to start with, or should I look for something else? Also, can anyone recommend any beginners books? Thanks.

Hi Buzz. Welcome to the hobby that's 99 hobbies in one.

The best place to see ham equipment reviews is on eham.net. Here's the reviews of the FT2800M. Apparently it has a reliability problem.

For a 2M/70cm HT you can't go wrong with a $30 Baofeng UV-5R. In most ways it is equal to my $160 Yaesu FT-60R.

Books are good but there's nothing like people. Find and join a local club.

Congrats on the new license!
That's a fine radio to start with. At some point you may want to get another rig or possibly replace the 2800 with a dual bander.
