Well... I finally got my act together enough to load my first rounds last night and try them at the range today... Here's what I came up with...

LC Cases - formerly Federal XM193
Remington 7 1/2 Primers
Varget Powder
Sierra Match King (SMK) 69gr.. Boat Tail bullet

24.1 grains was like a cap gun --- all over the paper (it did hit the paper though)

24.5 grains was better but still not able to group well

24.9 - Now we're getting somewhere.... 4 shots in the size of a quarter!!!

Gonna try 25.1 and 25.3 on Sunday if the weather cooperates...

Lee AutoPrime Primer - Nice and easy... seats reliably...

I made the investment in the Redding BR-30 Measure (Dead on once you tweak the micrometer...)

Many thanks to TonyD, Derrick and the others who have steered me in the right direction, scolded me when appropriate...Now I feel comfortable moving forward with other loads...

Have a nice weekend! The Ark is full...

Jon

Jon, glad to hear it. It's nice the very first time you shoot your own reloads, isn't it?

+1 on that one.

I pretty much only load pistol rounds. But I tell you, it's a pretty cool feeling.

And when you load up your rounds for a shoot, and come in first in your division, it makes you feel even that much better.

I'm slowly getting my act together to start reloading. I have a lee press, and I've been saving all my brass.

I have a .257 Roberts, a round that rare, reloading is a must!

Arrrr

Jon,
What were you shootin' the reloads out of?
The 1X9 twist on my Bushmaster loves 24 grains of Varget w/ a 69SMK. Any more or less and the groups really loosen up.

Rock River Lower/WOA Upper 1 in 7 twist Wilson Barrel, 2 stage match trigger... crowned barrel...

I highly, highly recommend White Oak Armament/Precision and John Holliger for Custom work (my trigger)... Worth every dollar!!!

Went to the Big E gun show this morning (in my Ark) and only found some books/videos... prices were way too high for uppers and only 1:9 or greater barrels.... no one had any .22cal conversion mags either... SMK 69s for $60/500... no powder or primers... the vendor went out of business (so I was told) and someone new will be there in December...

Don't forget to come to the COPS Machine Gun Shoot October 29/30 at Westfield Sportsmen's Club... $5.00 entry and per round fee for a s---load of Full Auto guns, pistols, etc...

Does anyone have info on obtaining NRA classification for HP rifle???

Back to the reloading bench I go for more Varget loads... 25.1 & 25.3 for tomorrow...

Take care.

Jon

Jon,
Yeah, It'll be three months ago friday that I ordered my WOP match upper. I dare say I gotta be gettin' close.

I'll have to post a pic or two of this thing when I finally get it. Quality takes time.

The only time I ever did the Big E was during a December show and I 'bout froze my a** off out in the "ammo tent". There weren't too many deals to be had, either.

Thanks... Cledus... let me know when you get your WOP in... I'll have to come out and help you christen her...

Tony thanks for the classification info as well.

Ya know, I just had a friend email me about doing something "Halloweenish" that weekend... Got a link for this? Sounds like a winnah!

Tony,
If Mr. Holliger put your upper together in an hour's time, you musta been out there at Perry looking over his shoulder!!!
Maybe I can meet the gent if I can find my way out there next summer.

Yup, the evening before the President's.

Would that qualify as "Cuttin' it a little close"?

At least you got your gear squared away so you could shoot in time. I was supposed to shoot a Shuetzen match today.....ended up breakin' the firing pin last night and didn't have any spares so I had to sit this one out.

Actually, I had problems with my rifle and that was the only fix. John helped me out by building my upper the night before the President's. I did stand there over his shoulder as he explained everything. Only problem was, I had no zero's for the match.

Hi Jon -
What is your C.O.L (cartridge overall length) for those loads? I ask because I just made up my first rounds as well from basically the same components.

Sierra 69gr HPBT MK
LC 87 brass (also another batch with Remington commercial brass to compare..)
Varget 23.3/24.1/24.9/25.3/25.7gr
CCI #400 primers

The data I used for this load was right out of the Sierra book, with a C.O.L. of 2.260 which is basically max length, but they still fit in all my mags. The 25gr+ rounds crunch a little when seating the bullet.

I found similar loads in the Hornady and Lyman books that were more conservative on the powder, but also with shorter C.O.L. due to seating the bullet deeper.

I'll post more when I get to the range to fire these, but thanks for posting your first impressions.

Greg....he hasn't been on this forum since late 2005. Doubt you will get a response.
