Louisiana coroner claims first ever recorded death from marijuana overdose
Experts skeptical of Louisiana woman’s deadly weed overdose
Coroners aren't required to be doctors, as medical examiners are.
Probably a political appointee
Ban it! That will keep it out of the country!
Relaxed... all the way.
I don't know about this case, but it makes sense that sooner or later someone will OD on THC.
The historic "no one has ever ODed on weed" is accurate partly due to the way it is brought into the body, and both the lower potency of the past and probably the limits on how potent it can be made before it interferes with it being smoke-able.
But now they are breeding higher and higher levels, and extracting it from the plant, which allows other means of delivery. Sooner or later someone is going to try injecting THC.
So we may never see a Marijuana OD, but I'm betting there will be THC ODs.
Nonetheless, I support legalizing all drugs and letting it sort itself out.
I'm sure plenty of regular pot smokers have died from complications due to long term use.
People should be free to do whatever they damn will please as long as it doesn't harm someone else.
Being a drug addict or alcoholic with a family is a pretty shitty thing to do to your kids though...
Yeah but recreational use =/= addict
i think someone who has other diseases might be susceptible to dying while high. For instance, someone with severe diabetes might have very low blood sugar, not realize it, and end up in a coma. Or someone takes too many edibles, starts tripping balls, gets paranoid, and gets a heart attack....
Three out-of-towners, at least one elderly, hit the floor at a popular island restaurant last month. One of the women collapsed into the officer’s arms after he lightly tapped on her shoulder asking her to move so he could assist the other woman, the report states. "15 milligrams … THC … edible … all three… first time,” the woman told the officer.
You're right some related coronary and it might be promoted as a fatal OD.
Edibles blamed for Edgartown overdoses
Not after eating the 16 bags of potato chips, in the munchie frenzy.
Just dunk white toast in chocolate milk and the munchies will disappear after 12 slices.
in that case, maybe they just "fogot" to breath.
Caffeine has an LD50 of ~192 mg/kg
Nicotine is ~60 mg/kg.
Alcohol doesn't necessarily have an LD50, but if just .4 percent of your roughly 160 ounces of blood contains alcohol, you're in a bad situation.
THC has an approximate LD50 range of ~1,260 - 666 mg/kg. At the lowest figure, a 175-pound man would have to consume greater than 53 grams of pure THC all at once. For commercially produced edibles, you would probably die from an overdose of salt (3,000 mg/kg) or sugar (1,100 mg/kg) before even coming close to the threshold for marijuana.
You seem to have good information, maybe you can help with a couple points. At what rate does THC metabolize out of the system? What is the maximum concentration or TCH available (legally or illegally) in any form but in particular vape juice.
Verbally abusing or beating your kids with your fist is a pretty shitty thing too.
Cmon doc we're not scientists
Beer, whiskey, wine etc....is far more worse than weed. Move along
Oh, sorry. LD50 refers to the lethal dose where 50% of a population subject to that amount of substance would perish. This is usually determined through experimental trials on animals.
Point was, for THC, it is a large amount.
The more likely scenario is that this individual passed out, hit her head or something, and passed away from secondary cause. Or, something other than THC in the edibles contributed...
I'll get back to you on what I can find for these. There is probably variability for both questions. Body fat and state, for instance.
I was just looking at that as well. To put those numbers into perspective, on the low end that would be 1.87oz of pure THC. Assuming pure THC has a similar density to water (I don't actually know its true density) you'd need to consume two shot glasses full of pure THC and have nearly perfect absorption into your system for there to be a 50% chance of it killing you. If she was vaping it, as the first article claimed, she'd have passed out long before she got anywhere near the LD50 dose. If you want to picture it in edibles, a Google search showed that a typical THC infused gummy bear has 10mg of THC. Some have more, some have less, but this seems to be the average. At that rate, you'd have to consume 5,300 gummy bears to reach the LD50 dose.
I'd wager that if she didn't have THC in her system, they'd rule her death to be something like sudden cardiac arrest or speculate about some other possibilities, like she choked on an ice cube or something else that melted/evaporated and left little to no trace behind.
Ahh gotcha that makes more sense
Theres videos of people dabbing whole grams, basically freebasing pure thc. You tend to fall alseep before you clean up the drool at a tenth of that. Also, an LD50 dose would cost thousands. I bet if you abused other drugs you could trigger a siezure fall and hit your head.
The second article states that she had 8.4 nanoliters of THC per milliliter of blood, or .0084 mg/liter. Since blood weighs about 1.06 kg/l, just in blood weight alone, that's less than 1/6000 of the LD50.
Nonsense. She shouldnt have taken a drink from the mini-bar afterwards.
1.87 ounces....so 60 grams of shatter would get you there. But that's thousands of dollars. Literally pounds of weed to extract that much to shatter. But it could be ingested....
Duuude, like, don't harsh the narrative Mang!
its got the blue crystals
