Another thread got me thinking, there are several guns that every serious firearm enthusiast/owner should have in their collection. Here's my list. What about the rest of you guys?

Ruger 10/22
Ruger Mk II or Mk III

Smith and Wesson J-frame .38
Smith and Wesson .357 (any variety, SS)

Beretta 92FS (substitute your choice of high capacity 9mm service pistol)

1911 (any variety)

AR-15 (any variety)

12g Shotgun (Rem 870 or Mossberg 500 are good choices)

Bolt action rifle (Rem 700, Savage, Ruger, or even a milsurp)

Noteable omissions: Glocks, Sigs, stuff in .44,

I don't feel an AK is "necessary". An AK would be cool, but that roll is filled by the AR in my list.
Not saying this mirrors my collection, just a recommendation of "staple" firearms in a good collection.

Throw in a good bolt action (Savage 110 or similar, Remington 700, etc.), and an M1A or M1 Garand and you're in good shape.

I agree with everything but the (ick) Beretta 92. What makes you think that that is a staple? The ergonomics are awful - it's grips are too big for a LOT of folks. I'd change that to just read "a hicap Wunder-Nine like the Browning Hi-Power, Beretta 92 or CZ-75".

I would, however, add a Garand and possibly a lever gun of some sort.

Well oddly I've never had a 10/22 or MKII (or III) and seriously you need at least a shotgun on the list or at least a 40mm loaded w/ buckshot...

I think every collection should have at least one SKS, one AK47, one Mosin variant and one Mauser variant (preferably a K98).

Those 4 types have been proven and used all over the world probably more than any other firearms and they're still used in combat to this day.

OK, Ross. I'll buy that. Say a 5906, 226, G17, cz-75, Hi-Power, or 92FS. Good call. And thanks for understanding the nature of this post. I'm not looking for an inventory of stuff people already own. Just a list of solid, smart, useful firearms a newbie might aspire to own. +1 for you.

i love my 92FS, i don't really have small hands so there's no issue with the grips with me.

as for the hi-power and the CZ75? those are awesome and truth be told if i had the choice i'd take either over the beretta. i was checking out a non-compliant CZ75B at the marlboro gun show and it fit my hands perfectly. it was an awesome piece.

for someone in MA who can't get their hands on a CZ or a browning i think the beretta is an excellent choice.

Things I think you missed:
Everyone should own AT LEAST one AK - I used to quote price with this statement but those days are gone.

A bolt or lever gun - even if just a Mosin or Enfield or other old workhorse, automatics aren't infallible and it's good to have a back up if/when the poop hits the pin wheel.

A decent shotty - Think Mossy 500 or Rem 870

Lastly every shooter with most of the basics covered should make it their mission to acquire the ultimate evil black killing machine, the Saiga 12 gauge Kalashnikov. No collection is complete without one, by far the most fun for you $ in firearms right now. But hey YMMV

I would also add a .22 wheel gun and a few others that are not really must have but just my prefs, and +1 to your first must have, I always have and still do maintain that every newbies first purchase should be a Ruger 10/22.
Just my .02

And I'd switch the 30-06 for a .308.
