Telegraph article says, "French media reports added that the fire was started by accident, citing police sources."

    Sounds like not...

It's an amazing piece of architecture especially considering what the builders had to work with. the article I just saw mentions renovations being done.
It's a huge fire from the pictures. Very sad. it was one of the best places I visited in Paris.

They’d never admit it if it was.

    It's bad.

They've been doing renovation work there. I wonder which semi-striking worker left his cigarette burning on a gargoyle...

Horrible. Even if they can fight it and save any of the structure, the cost of repair will be astronomical.

Terrible loss of history and architecture. Given the status it will be a miracle if even the front two towers survive.

I would hate to be the company contracting that work right now. The person responsible may as well eat a bullet immediately.

That would be a bold move. And by bold I mean pretty stupid. You think Catholics won't destroy competing religions places of worship in retribution?

It's most likely this was some retarded French worker making an dumb mistake on the job. That church is a 700yo tinderbox

Breathless live coverage everywhere. The roof has collapsed, so it won't spread any further. But it's all timber-framed, so... yeah. We'll see which of the walls stay up.

The reports are a fire started in an area of the cathedral where renovations were being done.

You mean like 9/11 or the Charlie Hebdow/cafe attacks?

The majority of the structure is stone inclluding the massive buttresses that support the roof......they also have a huge water reservoir in between the two towers which is suppose to be able to be used in case of fire

    The roof is also slate/stone........

There's not that much wood in the structure but what exists is old and presumed to be very flammable......

Sad! I guess they don't retrofit these old buildings over there with sprinkler systems.

The other thing to consider is that firefighters need access. Usually, they get access by chopping through shit. Anything you chop through there? Either a five-foot-thick wall or a priceless stained glass window.

This is not completely true. A lot of it is wood carved to look like stone. Many of the repairs and changes since finished construction in 13th century were wood for ease of repair. This is not an uncommon practice for upkeep of old structures pre industrial era

Well, if the whole thing burns down, the immigrants can build a replacement mosque to showcase France's diversity and multiculturalism.

The cultural and architectural loss to mankind in this event is tragic. Colleagues have visited there before and have sent me pictures. Awe-inspiring just to see the interior.
