A Prussian uniform.
401B0F5E-D16C-412C-A620-C241A4D5A6A7.jpeg He passed away in 1975 shortly after I enlisted in the Navy. I do not know much else. He served in France and was wounded On july 10, 1918 at the battle of Chateau-Therri NW of Paris. I have a Prussian flag embroidered by my Nana I am having framed with this photo. I really wanted to do a shadow box with a period correct Luger but DANG! they get expensive. Any historians here can tell by the uniform his rank or unit? Could the white spots by his hips be a sword and dagger? He never spoke about this when I was young. I’ll have a pic of the finished tribute to him when it’s done

Edit to add; a quick look into the battle where he was wounded shows he survived the battles of Belleau Wood as well as The second battle of the Marne ! Two of the most storied and historic battles of WW1. I always knew he was a true badazz when I was a kid. He was the strongest man I had ever seen and the kindest to children & women. He proved to be more of a father to me than my dad. When I last saw him before he died it was at an Aunt's house in July of 1973. He was stripped to the waist swinging a sledgehammer busting up a brickwork planter at 77 years old !

My pleasure. Great photo of a great man...

Found a photo of a Mounted Dragoner tunic...

The collor looks gold on black though. Getting closer...

@ enbloc for some reason I can only do "like" so here's some love back at 'cha 😍 gonna take me some time to through that.
If you have the original photo and a good magnifier you may be able to get more detail on the Parade Helmet badge. This is the only piece of evidence that will tell you
who he was assigned to.

Most likely one of these...

Best of luck,

I found some more photos of a period Prussian uniform.
Red collar and cuffs appear to be Engineer, and in this case it is an authentic and well-cared for Officer's uniform.

Note the different adornments...
Especially the cuffs in the last photo.
Officers apparently had a "flourish," and not a "bar" and button.
And also has gold belt strands.

This example is of a General's uniform.

So, my guess is your grandfather was an enlisted man and not an officer. He worked for a living. [smile]

After a little research, The Parade Plume (also called a "Triktor") in white indicates Officer.
Triktors came in 3 colors: Black, White and Red. (red indicates "musician")
Officers could wear Black or White Triktors depending on the circumstance/ceremony...

Your Grandfather however, does not appear to have the Gold Band ("chinscales" or chinstrap) like the photo on the right, which indicates "Officer".
His appears black, for enlisted. This may indicate "Mounted Guard" enlisted uniform.

I'm having trouble finding precise data...

Interesting: Prussian artillery wore a "cannonball" pickelhaube...
This example shows the "Updated" vented pike.

Here is a Mounted Garde' Tunic.

Note the black background on the collar bands...
Would pair with the White triktor on Parade helmet...
