New Haven, Conn. (WTNH) - A convicted felon was taken to the hospital after shooting himself while using the bathroom.

The incident happened shortly after 10 Saturday night, at 166 Thompson St., New Haven.

Darrel Johnson, 51, originally told police that he had been shot during an attempted robbery. However, Johnson later changed his story and told police he had actually shot himself.

Johnson said he had recently obtained a small caliber revolver for personal protection and had forgotten he had moved it from his pocket to his waist band.

According to Johnson, while he was using the bathroom, the gun fell, striking the toilet and going off.

Johnson suffered a gunshot wound to the leg.

Johnson, who is a convicted felon, faces related charges pending the outcome of an investigation.

a small caliber revolver

What kind of revolver would A/D when dropped ????
Maybe an NAA mini revolver if carried hammer-down on a live round ???

Good thing crooks are stupid enough to talk to the police about their crimes. If he had ditched the gun, sought medical assistance, and simply exercised his right to remain silent when questioned a conviction of "felon in possession" would be far from the slam-dunk he voluntarily handed the prosecutor.

If he was smart, he wouldn't be a convicted felon in the first place. Or at least he wouldn't have shot himself.

It's called grabbing the gun as it falls out and accidentally pulling the trigger.

Either that or the guy in the stall next to him was pulling an Astair - aka Foley foot tap.

Most criminals get caught because they're stupid, not because cops are smart.
