I had a somewhat unnerving experience last night. I stopped for gas in a somewhat sketchy area of Manchester after attending a monthly meeting of an organization I belong to. I have been there before and observed things like wannabe gangbangers and a woman who appeared to be a prostitute stopping cars as they pulled in and asking for money. The only reason I still go there is the price, last night it was $3.29.

As I pulled into the station there was a young black male wearing the required hoodie and saggy pants and carrying a small plastic bag, standing in the middle of the entrance. He attempted to make eye contact with me. I follow Clemenza's advice here, don't look nobody directly in the eye, but don't look away either. I pulled up to the pump and went inside. I noticed him follow me in. I paid for the gas and watched him as he left the store behind me without buying anything. As I pumped I just got a strange feeling. I could see him looking at me and looking around. At that point I had one hand on the pump and the other on my gun, making it appear as if I was standing there with my hand on my hip. He then walked around the corner of the building and disappeared into the darkness. Until the moment I was done filling my tank I kept my head on a swivel, seeing if he was approaching from another angle. Nothing happened and I got in my truck and left but the entire time I had a feeling I was being watched. I don't know if I was overreacting but I internally sensed that I needed to be alert. I have never felt that way before and hope not to in the future.

Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they aren't trying to get you. [wink]

Good awareness. You'll live a long time.

If those ADT commercials have taught me anything, its that White male in hoodies are the ones to look out for. Especially if they are out jogging.

$3.29 and hookers... now that's full service

Similar experience to a student of mine this evening of all things.

You did exactly the right thing.

1. Some part of you (conscious or unconscious) detected a potential threat,
2. You reacted to that threat with appropriate caution and also appropriate discretion. (Your gun-hand wasn't obvious).

Your problem was encountered and you went on your business as usual.

Sounds to me like a successful intervention of situational awareness and defensive measures.

lol

Good situational awareness, glad you were carrying. I love putting my hand in my pocket and feeling my .380 in my pocket holster.

This

Exactly why I love pocket carry....it's easy to discretely place hand on gun

It's so sad...back in the 70s amd 80's, I used to hang out in manchester alot and was never ever afraid to walk the sidewalks at night of any part of it ...I was walking alone down Elm Street one evening a few weeks back and I felt like I was walking in the Bronx at night...I am so glad I had my .380 in my pocket and believe me, my right hand was on it the whole time.

I guess I'm a coward. I'd buy more expensive gas somewhere else where there aren't hookers and gangbangers.

+1 for good situational awareness. I'm always watching for stuff like that, call me paranoid I don't care but all the guns in the world wont help if somebody sneaks up behind you and bonks you on the head, or worse.

Yup, true cowardice is paying more for being in a marginally safer place. [smile]
I don't think it is marginal. Yes, bad things can happen in good places, too. But the relative crime rate in the ghetto is a lot higher.

At the end of it, sucks in general that you have to even look at it that way. Obviously, something about what the police are doing isn't working if someone has to feel like Luke when he meets Yoda.

$3.29 prostitutes in Manchester?

Lol, j/k.

Seriously though, don't put a hand on your gun, you're showing your hand.

And remember, scumbags like this work often in groups.

thats the stupidest thing i've ever readed in my life!

PS: you got ID'd as food by acting like a BIATCH and avoiding eye contact. you ALWAYS make eye contact with the lemmings in the ghetto.

jesus, you carry a gun so you can pump gas a couple cents cheaper and still have no balls.

It sounds like you were ID'd as Food.........

But what to do when you are surrounded by No Smoking signs?!?!?!

[rofl] [rofl]

he shoulda had one of them strike anywhere matches, light the match on the gas pump, therfore turning the gas pump into a giant lighter, then light up his virginia slim with his hand on his hip. maybe turned one of his pockets inside out too!

Had a dream last night that I was asleep on the floor of my bedroom and a couple I did not know walked in, stepping over me on the floor, as if they were attending a real estate open house. I demanded they identify themselves and they refused and told me to chill. So I shot them both on the spot.

The moral of the story... Don't be food.

You, sir, are an ass.

Mannerisms tell all. If you broadcast fear, you are telling everyone you're bait. If you're scared enough to come post about it on NES after, you're most likely broadcasting.
