Federal Agent Dies After Shooting Outside Pembroke Pines Post Office

POSTED: 9:15 am EDT August 5, 2008
UPDATED: 12:10 pm EDT August 5, 2008

PEMBROKE PINES, Fla. -- A U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent has died after he was shot outside a Pembroke Pines post office Tuesday morning, police said.

The shooting happened at the South Florida Mail Processing Center located at Dykes Road and Pines Boulevard.

According to police, the victim and another man got into a fight. That's when the gunman fired a shot and fled the scene.

The victim, who has not been identified, was rushed to Memorial Regional Hospital in critical condition, according to police spokesman Brian Davis. He died a short time later.

No motive has been released, but the victim's daughter was reportedly with him when the shooting occurred, so it does not appear that he was on duty at the time.

Police are searching for a silver or light-colored Chrysler 300 driven by a light-skinned man in his 40s or 50s. According to witnesses, the man was wearing a plaid shirt.

Nice to know that perp was apprehended. Daughter's family should be proud of her for helping find killer. I can only hope she doesn't somehow blame herself as she gets older.

Ideally no, forensics may clear that up though.

Maybe, but they won't clean this up (From the link):

Both men got out of their car, according to the report, and continued their argument. The probabe cause report said Wonder admitted reaching into his waistband, pulled out a handgun, and shot Pettit once in the head.

Looks like the agent may have been "unarmed" (not drawn, IF he was carrying) at the time.

I haven't seen a reference that showed where he was armed, let alone having drawn.

Had the agent been armed and had drawn, whole different story.

Other articles did mention that the shooter had a CCW license -- Brady group is already dancing in this blood.

Shooter did enter post office lot 1st. Dead guy went around corner, and into another driveway to confront the old guy, who apparently needed a talking to. What if the old guy darted into the lot just to get away from a looney road rager?

What's with the reports -- seemingly from police -- that the dead guy was on duty? That seems unlikely with his 12y daughter in the car. Do undercover police use their children for diversion? Or are the claim made to get more benefits? More athoratah? Or to justify hundreds of manpower and a couple helocopters in the search?

They need to upgrade their police sketch artist.

Here's the perp:
