I went to the dentist for the first time in 2 years today for a cleaning. I have a few cavities; one is between two teeth. Anyone ever have a cavity drilled from between the teeth? The last time I went to the dentist the doctor drilled a tooth without any Novocain. So I elected not to go back. Now I have a morbid fear of the dentist.

How bad is a tooth drilling?

I have a bad fear of that ultrasonic cleaner thing. So bad that I've been ignoring the dentist's calls for my cleaning. I'd rather let 'em rot and have 'em pulled out, that ultrasonic cleaner hurts me so much. I had an extraction last year, and it was nowhere as bad.

I had 4 cavities between my teeth and it wasn't that bad. Just make sure he corks you up with Novocaine to numb you up and you wont feel a thing. The ultra sonic thing wasn't that bad ether it just feels a little weird. I just clench my fists and get though it if it hurts. Theres worse things that you could go though than a fillings and a dental cleanings.

The drilling will feel a bit weird. If you let your dentist know about your anxiety, they can prescribe you a mild anti-anxiety med you can take 30 minutes before your appt. And they'll use a topical numbing agent before they inject the novacaine.
I have an immense fear of the dentist. The one I go to will use nitrous on me for cavity work (not on cleanings because they have to move around too much).
If you're really really anxious you should find a dentist who practices sedation dentsistry. You get a strong anti-anxiety med for the night before and morning of, and usually take a sedative before your appt. Then you're pretty much out for however long it takes to finish your work up. One day, an hour or two, and all your work is done and you shouldn't remember any of it.
My dentist is awesome (I honestly never thought I'd say that about a dentist). Pm me if you want details...

There are good and bad dentists. Find a good one (ask for recommendations) and you should be fine. The one who drilled without novocain was beyond bad.

Also, don't watch Marathon Man the night before.

That bothers me also but they don't have to use it. Tell them to use another technique.

I have a new dentist now and he was very good. He was recommended by my cousin. The hygienist was a bit of a hack. I had a mouth full of blood at least twice. He said a few cavities and something else. I can’t remember. The whole deal would take an hour. So I assume its not a root canal I have a fear of anything like that. When I had my wisdom teeth out it was not that bad, but they knocked me out for it.

What is a ultrasonic cleaner thing?

I think a big part of the fear is as you get older when you go to the dentist you KNOW they are gonna find something wrong, and then whatever they do to fix it feels like a social program proposed by a moonbat- a solution to a problem that didn't really exist. [shocked]

South Shore Dentistry. Great people and gentle dentistry. They also do sedation. I have always had a fear of the dentist. I don't need the sedation but they do good painless work.

That is my point. They offer it. They are good enough that I do not need it. But for arguments sake... There are those people that just cannot be reasoned with.. Have anxiety disorders and the like. Sedation Dentistry is a cash cow. If a Dentist doesn't buy in because he believes he is that good....Well his practice is already more than he can handle. Or he or she does not like money.

or he or she doesnt want to deal with the fact that with sedation comes all kinds of liability and legal issues...i know a dr who is now a mr instead who lost his license because an elderly patient died in his chair due to sedation

I am immune to cavities, if there is such a thing. I didn't have dental insurance for 9 years after college and when I finally went I was still cavity free. They wanted to schedule another cleaning for 6 months later and I laughed at them.

I have a coworker who assaulted a dentist when he drilled a cavity. He asked if she wanted novacaine or not, she said no, and so they went with it. Apparently, she flipped the freak out and jumped out of the chair punching him repeatedly.

Now she says a dentist traumatzied her and she wont go back [rolleyes] (granted, he had her charged, but was unfortunately nice enough to drop when he found out it would hurt her CORI check and my work would have to release her. God i wish he had let it stick)

One messed up thing with novocaine is after the shots wear off, then your f***king jaw/mouth etc seems to hurt where they injected it. It's like it stores up the pain and then spreads it out and gives it back to you later. No free lunch...

I don't think anyone "enjoys" going to a dentist. That being said- ever wonder why some older folks don't have any teeth? Go to the dentist every 6 months! I'm sure everyone gets a little anxious but it's not that bad. If you feel any pain during the drilling- ask for more novacaine. No dentist will drill any of my teeth without it!! I've had a root canal too... no pain, just a lot of time with the mouth open.

My biggest fear is breaking my teeth or losing a filling. My teeth seem to be extra sensitive.

Yeah- what the hell is ultrasonic cleaning????

I've had it done. It's not that bad if you're not a pussy about it. As long as the pain is finite, and it's going to make you better, just bear it. It won't kill you.

I have had compound fractures, a concussion, dislocated shoulder, broken ribs, and sever burns. After those injuries I still find the dentist and pain in the mouth unbearable.

Yeah it only hurts for a little while. And that novacaine works pretty good to take the edge off. I just hate having my mouth open, choking on drool and hoping the assistant will stick the tube in my throat so I can breathe again.

I will never allow anyone to do a root canal on me. I have had permanent teeth as well as wisdom teeth pulled, and its bearable. Endless root canals = no thanks.

I've had my fingers crushed off in a chain and sprocket (they're still gone). A slapshot in the heel hurts more.

I'm no expert at all.. but root canals are not what they used to be. One visit and they will have all the roots out. Fit a crown and that's all that left. I avoid a root canal if at all possible.. but only because it kills the tooth and makes it more brittle.

Dont' get me wrong.. I don't like the dentist.. but you don't have another set of teeth!!! I avoided the dentist when I was a teenager and I'm pissed at myself. I now have HUGE fillings as a result.

I've blown out my right knee. (ACL+ Meniscus tear). I don't think I've ever felt more pain in my life. I just use that as a reference for pain... eg... "ahh, this sucks, but it was nothing like THAT... " Nothing quite like feeling pain so excruciating you couldn't scream if you wanted to..... knocks the shit out of you.
