and your favorite item from the menu.

Barb and I love Cracker Barrel. My fav is the Country fried steak with gravy, mashed potatoe (a Dannyism), with dumplings and fried apples.

What's everyone else like on the road?

cracker barrel is good. Country boy breakfast is awesome. But if you have enough money to spend on cracker barrel then you just aren't "traveling" the right way. You are going on vacation. lol The best cheapest place to eat while on the road has to be A&W.

What's your favorite thing at CB, Lynne?
Grifter, breakfast at CB is the best and they have GRITS!
A&W, damn none around here anymore. When I was a kid, there was one in Kingston and another in Marshfield. Both had curb service with the window trays. The Marshfield one had the best fried clams.

Well, when I'm in the south, for breakfast it's got to be Shoney's. Their all you can eat breakfast is the best out there.

But I have to say depending on where we are...

If we're in the Midwest, then it's got to be Skyline. Actually, I'm making Cincy Chili right now...but anyway.

Maybe Friday's, they are pretty good.

But if they have them, then I HAVE to have White Castles. There's nothing like Chatau Blanc.

Hmmm....I like the pan fried steak. Fried chicken is pretty good too. I like the beans, and the corn bread and biscuts are yummy (except when I've had corn bread all weekend and then stop at one :D )

Down south (as in VA) I love the pancake houses...and grits! Yum.

IIRC, there's one between Ripton, VT and Shelburn, VT. I remember passing it in September.

Not real close, I know. [cry]

Anyway, for a travel chain, you really can't beat Cracker Barrel. When TLK and I drive to her sister's in SC, we leave before midnight, drive straight through and stop for breakfast in Petersburg, VA at the Cracker Barrel right off the highway at around 6 or 7 AM. I've got that one waypointed on my GPS!

But I like to explore... last time I went to NY, I stopped at the Dino BBQ in Syracuse. Awesome BBQ; some of the best I've ever had. (including the places my brother in law took me in SC. But then, what can you expect from a guy who thinks that Taco Bell is "great Tex-Mex"?)

Any votes for Olive Garden? The closest to me is in Portsmouth, NH. I adore their bread, salad and soups. Damn...my mouth is watering.

Heck ya! We love Olive Garden. There are 3 within 30-60 mins of us and rumor that one may be coming to town.

I made the mistake of stopping at a Waffle House in Florida once, yuck.

I used to be a waiter trainer for the Olive Garden. I love their Caesar Salad dressing.

Man, I love Waffle House. They have the best food late night after you've been drinking.

I like IHOP. It's hard to find decent vegetarian options on the road. Anywhere out of the Northeast they think vegetarian is the same as communist so you have to eat lots of salads and cheese sandwiches.
But pancakes are always vegetarian.

I like the fried okra and grits at cracker barrel, but to detail a problem, Patrick, myself and our 2 vegetarian friends went to cracker barrel a few months ago. To make a point I asked, "does the vegetable of the day have meat in it?"

Of course the answer was, "yes!" [roll] [roll] [lol]

We usually don't do chains when traveling. We like to try different places in the area. Sometimes it can be really bad though, and make you wish you had stopped at Wendy.etc. [twisted]

Brian, just off the top of my head, there are Olive Gardens in Natick (Shopper's world, RT 9W) and Berlin (by the Solomon Pond Mall, just off I290).

Enjoy.

Is the Olive Garden not in Bangor anymore?

The only OG you NEEDED a resurvation for!

I'd be suprised if it wasn't there anymore just because of the buisness it did!

Arrrr

When I'm away from home I almost exclusively eat at places you can't find around here. Trying new food is one of my favorite parts of going far from home. Whenever I'm in North Carolina visiting my brother, I have to make at least one trip to Sonic. They serve breakfast all day, so I feel compelled to add a breakfast burrito to my order no matter what time of day it is.

Maybe. I just put the Zip Code in for Waltham, MA and it kept giving me a list with "Next". I gave up after 3 or 4 screens worth and posted what it gave me to that point. Try a search on Bangor, ME and see what you get.

BTW, we (a group of 4 or 6) have had to walk out of the Natick OG a few times after being told >1 hour wait for a table! So Bangor isn't the only place where reservations should be needed.

When we've headed up to the one in NH, it's always been at least a half an hour wait no matter what time we went in...sometimes it was a bit longer. Just goes to show you the foods good. :D
