Favorite Books or Authors

Fiction: William Gibson and Neal Stephenson, easily my current favorites. I'm just finishing the 2nd volume of Stephenson's Baroque Cycle.

Non-Fiction: Too many to list. David McCullough, Joseph Ellis and vintage H.L. Mencken are frequent guests (outside of professionally related stuff).

I read daily for at least an hour. I love so many authors, but I'll try to narrow it down to 4.

W.E.B. Griffin- I own every book he's ever written, and that's quite a few. His old stuff, however, I enjoy far more than his new.

Stephen Coonts- His Jake Grafton series really kept my attention, and I've enjoyed his spin-off so far, also.

Joe Buff- A relatively new author. He has one series out so far, and I'm enjoying it.

Brian Haig- He's a new author also. I've already read his series. He's my new "hot read".

Science Fiction - "The Cronoliths" by Robert Charles Wilson. No one seems to know about this book, but it's one of the best hard science fiction books of recent years. His new book, "Blind Lake" was enjoyable but not as good.

Science - "The Red Queen: Sex and the Evolution of Human Nature" by Matt Ridley. Lots of interesting things about competetion between the sexes.

History: "The Second World War, Volume 2, Their Finest Hour" by Winston Churchill. I've only made it half-way through the entire 6 volume history, but the 2nd volume is absolutely essential and well worth reading as a stand-alone book. The 2nd volume is the Battle of Britain as told by the man who won it.

Any suggestions

First I would like to say that if you have not read the Da Vinci Code, you should great book. Also I like Tom Clany Books. Right know I am reading Net Force.

I like war books. Does anybody have any suggestions. I think my next book will be 1776.

I also read the girlie romance books,as I said my choices run the range. I also thought both of Ollie Norths books were good too. Mission Compromised, and Jericho Sanction.

Is there more than one.

I just started Net Force, is there more than one?

Has anyone ever read The Things They carry. another great book

Yes, Net Force is a series. I've read like 4 of them. I gave them to my Mom when she was here, so I don't remember which ones I had. I read them about 3 or 4 years ago. I'm pretty sure that it was just the first four.

I think that there are like 19 now...but some are for adults, and some are for young adults.

Great

I am wonder if I am reading one that is in the middle of the series. It's about Cyber Nation and this huge lawsuit against Net Force, does that ring a bell.

Ummm, I read the new Harry Potter book in one night...

After that I'm a voracious reader. I'll read anything. And do. I have to tell you one of my favorite books is "The Scarlet Pimpernel"

Net force lawsuit

The lawsuit has to do with this shooting that toke place. They haven't gone into the shooting to much. But know that I think about it, the book doesn't seem like a continuation of a book. Is it possible they are all unrelated.

Seriously though if you have not read the Di Vinci Code you really should.

The first four that I read all kind of went together. I think that he writes the book so if you just pick up one, it won't be too off. But they really do make more sense when you read them order...

Well, at least the first four did.

SR, my son finished the new Harry Potter,I'm in the process of reading it. I was a good Mom and let him read it first. He read like 3/4 of it in one night.

Oh, my... Books. Heh.

Favorite authors in no particular author:
Robert A Heinlein - greatest SF author in history, IMHO.
David Weber
WEB Griffin
Tom Clancy
H Beam Piper (for you gun collectors, hunt down a copy of "Murder in the Gunroom" - his only mystery. Wonderful book!)
Eric Flint is up there, too.
Keith Laumer for his Bolo stories.
And currently I'm working on SM Stirling's "General" series. (I forget the handle of the member living on Nantucket, but you should read "Island in the Sea of Time" - Nantucket gets thrown back in time to the Bronze Age.)

And the most recent book I finished was A State of Disobediance by Tom Kratman http://www.baen.com/chapters/W200312/0743471709.htm?blurb - very interesting story about the Second American Revolution. I recommend it to everyone here.

Yeah, but mine is 19,and thankfully he reads really fast. So I knew it would only be a couple of nights before he had it finished. He can read 2 or 3 books at the same time and not get confused. I also figured this way I wouldn't have to send it to him in Iraq either this way.

Fantasy: All time fav is David Eddings. Infact reading his work got me into writing. I'm not into scifi as much, but I did like C.J. Cherryh's series.

Love Clancy, Griffin, Flynn...there's a few more, but it's too bloody hot for me to think of them. And, for an oldie but a goodie, loved Agatha Christi.

Oh, yeah, and of course, Ayn Rand....although I didn't read Galt's speach at the end of Atlas Shrugged all the way through the first time. I did the 2nd reading tho.
