Any suggestions are appreciated. I'll be outside for hours at a stretch, and my hands will be like clubs without decent gloves. Waterproof or something like it would also be good. Thanks in advance.

Shooting with gloves that are good enough to insulate for long periods of time sucks. You might want to find some mittens or those glove mitten things where the top comes off and exposes your fingertips at least. Shooting without finger feel on the trigger sucks.

I never found a glove that I liked to wear to shoot. I was surprised how quickly I was able to pull off my glove and draw when I needed to and I hadn’t practiced that. After the fact I realized that I should have practiced it.

Whatever you do be sure to practice as you are equipped. With gloves or getting rid of the glove quickly.

Imagine doing that in war conditions. Think of our guys in Korea, the Finns in the Winter and Continuation War, the Eastern Front, etc.

Back when I was doing more Winter shooting outdoors, I was looking for gloves to shoot with and that I felt were "safe" to put a gloved finger in the trigger guard.

I never found anything that I felt wouldn't compromise safety!

I tried on numerous gloves at a police supply place, IACP Expo in Boston, etc. Read lots about them on LE forums, just never found anything I was real comfortable wrt safety.

Post-hunting season a few years ago I bought some warm camo gloves at Wal-Mart (probably $1/pair) and I wear them at the range (as RO) or up until I start shooting. If it's real cold, I sometimes wear "bicycle gloves" . . . these are half gloves with a leather palm but only cover your first knuckle on each finger so nothing goes in the trigger guard.

YMMV

These are the best gloves i have ever owned for multi purpose.
They are not for very low temps in this model http://www.lapolicegear.com/haspalneshgl.html

But the lined ones are better for the cold, http://www.lapolicegear.com/wispalgl.html

I wear these everyday from Oct. to Feb.. they have a real feeling to them and are very good in wind and will work under water.

"The Hatch Specialist All–Weather Neoprene Shooting Gloves NS430 is Hatch's most popular all-weather duty glove. Designed specifically for all-weather handgun use, this glove is an essential piece of equipment for all men and women of Law Enforcement. The palm is made of Synsi-feel synthetic leather, which provides excellent grip and accurate feel. For maximum grip, Toughtek non-slip patches are sewn onto the palm and all fingertips except the index finger, to facilitate the best possible trigger control. A Velcro closure keeps it comfortably and firmly in place. The NS430 feels like a second skin, with unmatched flexibility, dexterity and grip."

Great price too. -Jeffg

I use mechanics gloves. Cheap, offers some degree of protection for extended cold time (maybe add a heat pack? never tried it but it might work for you) and I can still feel the trigger.

Get my balls busted a lot but I use Fox dirt bike gloves with a heating pack in them. The grip on the palm works great and they are thin enough to feel the trigger.

I think I have the same LL Bean pair. Have been looking for new ones ever since. If they are the same, you are right that they are way warmer than their thiness would lead you to believe.

I went so far as to call LL Bean Corporate and they are no longer made :( they were park of a glove over mitt combo. I bought the ones they replaces them with and it was carp

Usually in NE it's not the cold but the WIND that kills you. For me, most of the time those plain old Isotoners do well for me. (I have smallish hands). Fior the really cold days I have some Oneil snowboarding gloves that are ACCEPTABLE, not what I would choose io shoot with except in very cold weather. I hate gloves and avoid anything other than windguards as long as possible. But at some point you have to cede to weather reality and adjust to warmer finger protection.

Ocean State Job Lot has lined leather gloves for $5 a pair. I buy a few pair every year and cut the liners out of them. It leaves a naked leather shell which I wear riding. If you get a good fit they are soft enough to give a decent feel and they aren't overly slippery. If I had to draw with them on I'm comfortable that they'd be just fine.

When I was at Fort Leonard Wood, we had mittens with a trigger finger you could slide your finger into to shoot. They were calling the fort "little Korea" when I was there. Try Army surplus.
