Elon Musk's Boring Company Flame Thrower

"Tesla Motors Inc., SolarCity Corp. and Space Exploration Technologies Corp., known as SpaceX, together have benefited from an estimated $4.9 billion in government support, according to data compiled by The Times. The figure underscores a common theme running through his emerging empire: a public-private financing model underpinning long-shot start-ups.

He definitely goes where there is government money," said Dan Dolev, an analyst at Jefferies Equity Research. "That's a great strategy, but the government will cut you off one day."

This is likely either fake, or has nothing to do with Musk.

boringcompany.com and theboringcompany.com both point to the same page. I'm pretty sure this is a real product, but it doesn't look like a real flamethrower to me, it looks like someone wrapped a $20 harbor freight torch in a nerf gun shell.

Weird, that's not what I get?

theboringcompany.com gives me "Established in 2006 The Boring Company has grown in to the leading HDD company in Nevada by continuing to meet all customer expectations and needs. Based in Las Vegas with 20 years experience in the horizontal directional drilling, trenching and hydro excavation techniques, and 27 years in the cable business through out Las Vegas and surrounding areas....", whereas boringcompany.com wants to sell me a propane torch masquerading as a flamethrower.

Yup, not sure how I made that mistake. Theboringcompany.com is not the website mentioned by Musk on twitter though, boringcompany.com is, and it has the cheap torch masquerading as a flamethrower

Aren’t they having massive problems with the new Teslas right now?
Yes they are.
Sold out :(

I know everything's illegal in Massachusetts, but do we have any actual laws about flamethrowers here? Now I'm really curious.

Rule of thumb used to be is that they're legal for agriculture purposes only (think starting burns to clear land of pest weed, etc.). Historically they've been so niche I doubt there's much more than that on the books as far as the law goes.

I'm sure it's going to get the other novelty ones, which I was thinking of buying, banned. After the bump stock debacle it's like, why throw my money away?

I really, really doubt that considering there have been commercial flamethrowers on the market for a few years now here and there, or kits that you can easily buy and assemble to do the
same. It's not really a product you can ban easily. Probably easier than building a gun off an 80%. They never really showed up on the radar because, well, it's fire, what are they going to do,
ban fire?

Ironically unless you have specific uses for it, the product is kind of "boring". Anyone can set shit on fire, a flamethrower basically just does it faster. (well, and it looks cool).

But won't someone think of the children? We need to ban high capacity flamethrowers!

My guess is Musk's novelty torches will end up getting real flame throwers banned at the federal level.
It looks like his novelty thrower throws out a flame based on a gas fuel, rather than incidigel or some similar component designed to stick and burn. The difference is in maximizing destructive potential vs. fun and cool visual effect.

It appears he announced a limit of 20,000. Not sure if this is to avoid having a federal ban promoted, or to force "Fear of loss" pre-sales.
