I found an early (150,000 range ) original barrel (10-42 dated and in good shape) with most of the early parts, (flip sights, push button safety etc )BUT it was stuffed into a Plastic collapsible stock. But I got it Cheap. so I can hunt for a correct stock and then get rid of the plastic monstrosity.

Any good sites to do some research? I know I need to pick up a few books too. But it is a non-import, original finish gun so I feel I am ahead of the game. (and I got it for 350.00)

For the ultimate resource, get the "War Baby" books. There are a ton of other smaller (cheaper) ones as well. As far as info on the web:

Again, just scratching the surface. For parts and pieces:

(replacement stocks still available)

(stocks also available)

Good Luck, and enjoy!

Who did you rob for that one?

I have Riesch's book and it's a nice handy little reference to all the parts and manufacturers. If you're going to the July 4th shot, I can bring it so you can take a look.

As for stocks, What A Country has had M1 carbine stocks in stock and I believe they do take requests for specific manufacturers

I'd like to see a picture of the piece in its current configuration, if you ever get the chance ...

Yeah, you guys need to tell me where you're getting all these early Inlands.

I have an Underwood, Rock-Ola, Saginaw, Quality Hardware (although with many commercial parts), IBM, and a CMP S'G' coming, and I'm going to go for a Standard Products hopefully in July. But no Inland, no NPM (had to cancel my CMP order for one due to money), and no Winnie.

Well I was showing my local dealer my 44 willys MB and I walked in to take a quick look around and it was on the shelf. I broke it down tonight and it is mostly inland, (only part I am not 100% on so far is the op rod. it is very dirty) the finish is so-so, if it wasn't possibly collectible I would re park it. but I don't see doing it. I will try to get some pics once I get it cleaned up.

One question I have is what was the original finish on this vintage inland? the underside of the barrel is blued where it was in the stock, ( the rest is more of a brown due to patina)

All M1 carbines were parkerized, except the original prototypes, I believe. Certainly yours should have been.

did some more reading evidently some early ones are a mix of finishes. (blued, parked, and black oxide) I can tell it's the original finish on the part as the machine marks are there. if it had been cleaned up then it would have been smoothed up or blasted and more of a mat finish. either way for now other than cleaning it up I am leaving it alone. I always assumed that Parked was correct, but this and a few posts I found on other boards (jouster) seem to indicate otherwise.

Glenn,

Congratulations on a good find. If youhaven't checked them yet, the posters over at www.jouster.com have quite a bit of expertise on military firearms.

The very, very early ones were mixed, but by the 150K mark I'm pretty sure they should have been parked.

A good place to check would be http://www.m1carbineforum.com, or the CMP boards.

What's the date marking on the barrel?

NM: Saw that you posted it. 10-42 sounds about right for that range but checking at the above boards will give you everything you ever wanted to know about finishes and barrels.

Just an update- That gen was often blued, (as mine is) along with the receiver, (the bottom shows some blueing still) I will not be refinishing it to say the least and it is all 100% inland. SO I have a ww2 stock coming for it, and will be hunting for the proper High wall with an I cut oiler slot to replace it.

Anyone want a Plastic collapsible stock? I will be putting it up for sale cheap.(enough to cover the wood stock in the 40.00 range, new they go for 90.00)

Weasel, it'd be a good idea to keep it because if it's been on that gun since 94, it means it's AWB compliant and you can use evil features should you ever wish to.

I thought about it but Honestly unless I put a repro Paratrooper stock on it It is staying in stock config. Since the M1 carbine is on the evil list anyway isn't it a moot point?
(ie it is on the banned list so you can add more features to it?) I thought it was mentioned in the law, I just checked and it isn't Hmm. Maybe it was the old US awb I was thinking of.
