Don't try this at home, kids

Yeah Joe was a Martial Artist long before he was a Comedian.

Sombody asked him once "Were you nervous when you first did Stand-up"

he said "I used to have puches and kick thrown at me in front of thousands of people....Standup is nothin'!"

Arrrr

Pass Out

That hold is not a "choking", since the trachea is in the notch of the elbow and is not compressed or crushed. The hold clamps down on both carotid arteries, and the cubject passed out due to the lack of blood to the brain.

This used to be a fairly standard and common police technique, but was largely abandoned because it was usually, but not always, non-lethal.

Not to put too fine a point on it, Rob, but this is indeed a choking technique, done not on the trachea, but on the carotids.

Choke off the blood supply to the brain, hold for a couple seconds, and the victim passes out.

Choking, advanced edition. :?

Cutting off the AIR supply is choking; cutting off blood is not:

choke >verb 1 prevent (someone) from breathing by constricting or obstructing the throat or depriving of air. 2 have trouble breathing. 3 (often be choked with) fill (a space) so as to hinder movement. 4 make speechless with strong emotion. >noun 1 a valve in the carburetor of a petrol engine used to reduce the amount of air in the fuel mixture. 2 an inductance coil used to smooth the variations of an alternating current or to alter its phase.
-ORIGIN Old English, related to cheek.

Not to be a stickler, but there are many definitions of the word Choke.

Some have to do with air, some liquid, and some with metal.

Don't forget the choke for a shotgun...or how it's used in sports.

The basic thought of the word choke is to retard, slow down, or stop. It doesn't always have to do with breathing.

It does if the subject is a human (or pretty much any lifeform with an airway), which it was.

I don't buy it, that guy went down way too fast and seemed to have some sort of response to the smacking, and then regained consciousness pretty quick as well.

Either its a total fake or the guy is just a little pansy who fainted instead of passing out.

Nah with carratid hold like that you go down REAL quick once the artery is pinched. Since Joe was feeling for when he went limp and released VERY quickly the brain was only starved for a moment, and then all flow resumed, so he came back quickly too...although VERY groggy.

Maybe not the safest thing in the world to do, but I think Joe handled it well, and he IS very well-trained in such a thing.

I really hate to admit this but, When I was a kid (13-15), the group that I hung around with did this alot. We would apply pressure to both sides of the throat with the palms of our hands and our volunteer would pass out. We would guide them down gently, and the count off the seconds they were out. Stupid? Yes. But I cant deny we did it......

There was a kid in our High School who subjected himself to 15-16 consecutive black-outs. I can't remember exactly how it was done....something like the person with exhale all thier breath and somebody would kneel on his chest. Or somthing like that.

Now that was stupid. I would comment about potential brain damage....but this guy had the scarecest quanity of wit to begin with, so I don't think damage could be measured with science....

But a quick drop like that isn't too much different from somebody getting a major head-rush from standing up too fast when your blood pressure is low.
