probably some sort of hypnosis. Obviously since he is a Martial Arts master, his students respect him, making them more prone to suggestion. While the others didn't know the guy from Adam, so they could "reist".
The best part is the Master's Bullshiting to explaining why his tecnique didn't work.
I had a "friend" who took some weekend class in "rei-ki" and he claimed he could heal and do other stuff with his body's energy.
Some friends belived him, and felt he could cure aches and pains et al.
Being the sceptic (and frankly sick of his drivel) I asked him to heal the nicks on my scalp (I had just shaved my head, and I didn't do a very good job 8) )
To my suprise, he agreed!!
When his Rei-ki didn't do crap he said "You're Third Eye is closed!"
