We are now owned by a very happy Brittney we adopted from a rescue group. She is 3 years old very birdy and loves to point. I will be starting training her soon, She has had some training in the past I can tell.
I am used to flushing dogs, While one of dads Labs pointed she did it under only some conditions.

As I am getting older and a little slower, I definatly want to train her right so I am doing some research. any Books you know of or sites would be very helpfull. I honestly think she may be one of my better bird dogs if I don't screw this up. (I have trained 3 dogs myself with 2 being older dogs (Older than her)

I don't know squat about pointers, but I have heard some good things about George Hickox. He used to be out of Timberdoodle in Temple NH, but has moved. I have his upland flushing dog video, and it is excellent. I would assume his pointing video to be goo too:

You may want to check eBay, as I that is where I picked mine up for significantly less...

Thanks! this is new for me also. But the basics should be the same. I will check it out. (keeping it fun for me and the pup!)

Forgot to mention that there may be some training groups and/or clubs in your area. I belong to a couplt retriever training clubs near me, and they are INVALUABLE. Gives you hands on know how, access to training spots, birds, etc.

NAVHDA is a great organization too. Might be worth checking out.

The Brittany Club might help too:

Have fun with the pup!

Train the dog to WOAH! It will take the most time but will be worth it. The book "Gun Dog" is a bit on the old side, but will provide alot of tips and methods for training pointing dogs. But be prepared to learn how the dog works. There has to be some give and take. You may notice certain mannerisms when the dog is on a bird compared to a chipmunk. Beware of the chipmunks. Pains in the ass.

That is one advantage I have now, I am older and much more patience than I was with the last dog even. (He was a springer ) He was a bird maniac, ANY bird. drove me nuts but I figured out when he was on a Pheasant 98% of the time.
