state law prohibits stores from opening on Thursday. The prohibition also applies to Sunday, December 25th, when Christmas will be celebrated.

So much for private industry. If I was the CEO of Wallmart I would call Romney and tell him that I'm pulling all 44 of my stores. I forgot the employees of Walmart were drafted and they shouldn't be forced to work holidays.

I can't wait to see what gets banned if Adolf Reilly becomes govenor. [roll]

I am honestly baffled at the state government here. It seems if a public servant wants to make a name for himself and secure higher office they start making more laws to pin on their resume.

Even if you only take one apple away at a time, eventually the basket will be empty.

See hun, if they start doing things that allow us, the peons, to decide if we're going to participate (as in shopping on Turkey day), then they're afraid we'll figure out we don't need them. Oh wait - WE already know that...what was I thinking??

Then why are CVS's open Today? The one by us boasts that they are open 24 hours, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Hell, I stopped in there today to pick up two propels, a water, and hot chocolate packets for my wife.

And on the way home from the in-laws, CVS was still open, and so was the Blockbuster across the street.

The "Blue Laws" in MA were written back in the 1600s and 1700s by the Puritans. Unfortunately, they are still amongst us, protecting us from Bacon Hill!

So this wasn't an invention of Romney's, he's just enforcing something that's been on the books since the Pilgrims landed!

They've whittled away at some of these laws VERY SLOWLY over the past 20 years or so, but I don't expect to still be breathing when the last of them get wiped off the books in MA. [roll]

and dont sell liquor on holidays either.. becuase you know only satanic baby eating heathens would want access to a bottle of white wine on the holidays?
evidently romney feels that the state is doing so incredibly well fiscally that we dont need the tax revenue. [roll]

1st - CVS can do it because they're a pharmacy - 2nd, it's up to the CofP to enforce the law. The AG got in nose in to this one, but it's basically up to the chief.

Yea, when I talk to the guys at City Sprits, they say that the day before a holiday is pretty busy. And that people usually overbuy because they don't want to run out and not be able to get more if they need it.

I was just happy when they said that bars and the like could sell beer on Sundays if the store wanted too. And I guess that it's working out because I don't know too many packys that are closed on Sunday.

Most of the police chiefs definately do stick to it too. When I first started working retail The stores couldn't open before noon on sundays. Holidays have always been iffy. Thanksgiving and Christmas, no way would they let them. Personally with dealing with soooo many lovely (sarcasm) customers before and after the holidays, there is no way I would want to deal with them on Thanksgiving or Christmas. Worked retail long enough to know that when it is the closest to the holiday the customers get the nastiest. Right up there with the day after each one. I was always truly amazed at how aweful people can get.
Also the stores would have to call the police chiefs each week for permission to open each week for sundays and holidays.

Soon it will be both illigal for stores to be open on Christmas....AND Christmas will be illigal.

They'll Probably call Dec 25 "Bunker Hill Day, PT II".

Arrrrr

Boy, I hear you there, Sue.

I worked at a convenience store for a few years while in college and I HATED working on Thanksgiving! (didn't mind much working on Christmas because it didn't mean anything to me as a kid... except that my family went to the movies because it was so deserted that day!)

Yes, the customers dispositions between now and Christmas starts to get really lovely. [roll] The closer to Christmas the worse they get.

Agreed. I avoid some of the larger stores, and most malls, just because of the miserable dispositions of some people. I just don't understand why some of them are so RUDE.

Since we've already blown this way OT ( [lol] ) - I used to love Christmas Eve when Ed and I owed our store. The last minute husbands could come in, 99% of them already tipsey from the work parties or get togethers, and they didn't care HOW much they spent. It was always a great day sales wise. [lol] [lol]

When I first started working in retail, around 1990. We could only open at noon and would be closed by 6pm. Holidays we were closed. I worked for Ames when I first started. There is also a good sized fine that goes along with opening when you aren't supposed too. It is enforced.

It just seems so ridiculous. Unless you're a government run facility then you can be open whenever the heck you want, as long as you don't force or use negative coersion to make your employees work when they can't.

Sundays and holidays were always time and a half. I have never had an issue working any, since after being in the military they are just another day. I worked all of them then,no big deal.
Usually when I worked sundays it would make most of my paycheck for the week.
I have worked all sides of retail.

see it's not bad if you're making good $$. I've voluntarily worked tons of holidays. 1) It's a good excuse to get out of uncomfortable family stuff and 2)it's good money.

I listed those in order of importance [lol]

The problem comes when they say you HAVE to work it. When I worked at Ames, they always asked for volunteers,Other places I have worked and where I recently left you Had to and as I said they would fire you in a heartbeat.

I don't mind working Holidays at work. We get double and a half time....well we get paid for the holiday. And we get time and a half. So it's really double time and a half if we have to work a holiday.

So that means that if a server goes down on Flag Day, then I get the money. So I really don't mind working Holidays.

Then only day that I didn't like working is when a Server went down on Superbowl Sunday. I think that that the Monday after should be a Holiday. [shock]

Well....this is all part of this "consensus culture" thing I frequently mention. First, as Len pointed out, all of the Blue Laws are just about gone. Now what is wrong with closing everything down for a day and just being grateful or thankful for what we have. Frankly, I was incensed when the spokesman of the 88 Markets said that since they were Chinese they didn't celebrate Thanksgiving. Well, let's go ahead and just make Thanksgiving another day. Oh...one has the perfect right to not to observe Thanksgiving. I am not disputing that, and I have worked Thanksgivings when I wore a uniform....but what is wrong with a little bit of sanity in an insane world ? Is it asking so much, for the retailers not to open on Thanksgiving ? Why can't we all just take a break for one day? Let's make Veterans Day the second Monday in November, and Christmas the third Monday in December and the Fourth of July the first Monday in July.

I was down in New York City for Thanksgiving and there were stores open there, in fact there was even a Subway Sandwich Shop open at 10am on Thanksgiving morning. Why....?

So what is wrong with a little national tradition, or is it always about the individual ?

I don't know if it was mentioned in another post, but pharmacies are allowed to be open, if I were the AG, though only that part of the store that sold medicines and prescription drugs would be open....don't judge me too harshly because if I were the AG, Mass would become a "shall issue" state with everyone getting an ALP and no banned list....but by thunder, I'd enforce the Thanksgiving Blue Law to the letter of the law and beyond.

Regards,

Mark
