Do not feed the seals

Yeah they look cuite, but as a Marine Biologist, I must say the closest way to describe the seal family is "Small Marine Bear". They're powerful creatures with large teeth.

When all the boats were being sunk in the California marinas, a friend of mine asked me what was the best way to get a 500lbs sea lion off your boat.

I told her "Either a Mossberg 500, or they'll swim away once the boat sinks."

There are certain parts of the Marine Mammal protection act that I think were not thought through so well.

These guys come to mind.

This picture was taken at Greenville Animal Park.
The park is now closed down, because the owner passed. They would take in all sorts of animals that people had as pets and such, and give them a better home. This particular cub was born of a second generation retired circus bear. This picture was taken a few years ago, but I had the chance to play with it's mother as well. She was sweet as a kitten.

My brother-in-law is a herpetologist (science of reptiles) and would put on reptile shows at the park to help them raise money for the cause. I would frequently assist my bro-in-law at the shows he would perform, because at 5'6" lbs handling 20ft 250lb snakes was a bit much for him alone.

That same day, I also had the pleasure of playing with a rescued Hyena (he was used for years in a dog fighting ring) It is truly amazing the work those folks used to do for the animals, I was sad to see the park close it's doors...

PS. No hickey, but a TON of bear slobber!

They were all sent to other exotic animal rescue centers and zoos across the country.

The thing that sucked though... The folks at Greenville would take exotic animals from people who could no longer care for them, or once that baby leopard got big and too aggressive for them to keep in their homes, people could just bring the animals there and hand them over with no questions (or authority) involvement. When I was talking to the owner, he said the problem is that most places will turn you in, or you will have to turn yourself in for having a "pet" that is illegal before anyone will take it. So to avoid prosecution and fines people will just let them lose with no means for providing for themselves. They gave the people an easy way out with no one hurt...

It wasn't so much that no one wanted to continue it... But more like no one that was available was capable of doing what the late owner did. For instance.. That Hyena that he had, that was used for years in the dog fighting ring... The poor thing was put into the ring with any number of different breeds of dogs at one time. It was usually something like the owner telling other fight breeders.. "I'll put my Hyena up against your best 4 pit bulls and see who wins. So this Hyena was kept in a smallish dog kennel, never done anything with other than starve it to be mean, and fight it hard. The Hyena was vicious when it arrived... Within a couple of years the owner had it to the point he could touch/hug, and show it some love...

Truly amazing if you ask me!

That is truly sad. I am a sucker for kids and animals. Places like that are rare and need to continue. If for nothing else the animals sake. Some people truly have a gift with animals, sounds like they did.

Yes they/he did..

I asked him how he went about taming the Heyna... Simple enough, but obviously effective... He turned his back to the animal and read to him from books. Keeping his voice smooth and monotone, and slowly moving closer and closer to the cage, until he could sit on the ground with his back against the cage and the hyena would just lay down and listen intently to him read... Calmed the animal and let him befriend it.

Truly amazing!
