Democrats propose 35% ammunition tax in Connecticut

Democratic legislators are proposing a 35 percent tax on firearm ammunition, with the generated revenue going to programs they say have been proven to reduce gun violence in urban areas.

Joined by her Democratic colleagues and gun violence prevention advocates, Rep. Jillian Gilchrest, D-West Hartford, unveiled her proposal during a press conference at the Legislative Office Building on Thursday.

Gilchrest intends to use the revenue from the excise tax to fund on-the-ground operations aimed at connecting with young people before they engage in criminal activity. Any revenue not spent, she said, would be slated for expanding protections at places of worship or other areas focused on limiting firearm-related victims.

Gilchrest said the proposal would cost a few dollars more for a box of 50 bullets, raising about $7 million annually, citing numbers from the nonpartisan Office of Fiscal Analysis.

“Guns do cause gun violence, so we are asking for those who purchase ammunition to pay a little bit extra,” she said, adding that the intent of the bill is to exclude law enforcement officers, corrections staff, and military personnel using ammunition for their occupations.

House Majority Leader Matthew Ritter, D-Hartford, compared the excise tax to those already in place, such as those on alcohol and tobacco, which are charged on products sold legally but still pose a risk to society.

Cops are exempted. Why am I not surprised?

We (ct) had another (?) female dem try for a 50% ammo tax not long ago. CCDL asked why the dems hate poor people, as this tax would hurt their ability to practice self defense. NRA showed up for 5 minutes and mumbled as I recall, but the proposal got beat down. I have 4-5 more years to retire and get the heck out of this area of the country.
If this does pass, it'd be fun to find an ammo supplier who doesn't do tax reciprocity with Ct., but doubting it will.
This, kiddies, is one of the reasons why you stay stocked up. The unprepared in cali are having it rough getting something that was simple a year ago.

I spoke to a buddy of mine last night; he lives in East Lyme, CT. He says that he and others are going to RI these days to buy ammo. Dick's and Walmart were his "goto" places to buy but neither of them sell .556 or most pistol ammo these days. He laughed about that, because he can go into either and buy cases of 30-06 without anyone batting an eye.

He's loading 9mm, .38 and .45 - thinking about loading .556 but he doesn't shoot a lot of it, so...

And he's stuck in CT. He's got a nice home, family there who need him, and a solid job as a carpenter for a CT based remodeling firm.

I propose that any person associated with a single anti-gun feel good useless piece of legislation be stripped of their right to own firearms, their luxury cars and mansions taken and sold to fund their pet projects.

And they can never have any security detail which involves the use of said firearms for protection.

The problem with this logic is that it is indiscriminately grouping legal, law abiding gun owners in with the law breaking masses, literally making us pay for crimes of the few crazy and/or career criminals. If you applied this logic to, say, cars, you'd end up with a 35% sales tax on gasoline for all drivers because of drunk drivers.

Yea, cuz the MA gas tax is only 28%
