How can you teach a class as you described, with the rules in place at that club?

Drawing a pistol from a holster is NOT allowed at the rifle range

Drawing from a holster is NOT allowed, UNLESS: you are an active Law Enforcement Officer, you are an active USPSA member and participate in IPSC/IDPA shooting events, and have the appropriate holster, etc.

The following rules were imposed on the ranges which made it impossible to continue to hold action pistol matches:
- All shots must be directly at the rear berm, no angle shots of any kind
- All movement of the shooter must be conducted at a walking pace with unloaded firearm and action open
- The shooter may only have the minimum number of rounds required for the course in their possession at the start signal (ie: if you miss or pull a shot low you do not have any spare rounds to make up that shot)
- There must be 3 separate Range Officers. 1 to watch and travel with the shooter, one to carry the timer and a third to do scoring. No range officer can do double duty.

A an instructor using the range, do you have special permission to operate outside of these rules?

Hi SJan,

We have been running this class there for the past three years. Our syllabus and methods of instruction were submitted to and approved by the board of directors. So yes, we can and do operate outside of the range rules when running these classes, instead abiding by our syllabi and industry accepted training methodologies.

Thanks!

Rob

Yup, shut down a very well liked action pistol program with rules that make no sense but then allow commercial instruction that violates the very rules put in place causing the disbanding of the program

With all due respect, we had absolutely nothing to do with that set of circumstances. We had zero issues with that program and tried to be 110% symbiotic with the club and all of its activities. Did we ever interfere with the shoots? Did we ever interfere with the general access to the range? The answer is no.

The disbanding of the action pistol program came as a surprise to us and we did not receive word about it until the general message was sent out to the membership. We still don't even know what brought the changes about. Perhaps ghettomedic can elaborate.

Rob,
Good luck with your class and I do realize that you have a do your training somewhere, however, hopefully you understand the sentiments that some of the folks on the forum are thinking and writing.... Basically, some of us are feeling like the club is saying show me the money and we will let you bend the rules.... Like it or not, but it is not up to us how the club conducts business and emotions can get a little elevated....

Once again best of luck on your registration and is seems like some of us are caught in an ordeal:

- cut off our nose to spite our face... Not to scrutinize all of the activities at 2 clubs that recently decided to stop the action shooting programs/event while promoting other events.
- start a recall on officers at clubs that seem to believe that club should have other priorities other than shooting events and programs.

Honestly sometimes I think we are our worst enemies....

We all want to do more to promote and support club events but family and work are the priorities and what pays the bills. I have attending a few events at Independence and other clubs and at these events you are under the watchful eyes or the ROs and others.... Words of encouragement, things to be careful of, and even stern warning and consequences if you do something wrong or it you get distracted.

Thanks

Shane

Thanks Shane. We only want to coexist and support the club. In addition to our training we also handle duties at the club regarding orientations and are looking to to more to further support the club as a whole.

I understand that emotions run high, but it just seems a bit off to lump what we do into the cause of recent issues.

A little off topic, but do you carry your own insurance for this program?

This question has NOTHING to do with the club being mentioned at hand. Just thinking of a different place that you may be able to hold your class so long as you are insured.
