Defensive Gunfighter I - Saturday Nov 7th, 2020 - Mansfield, MA

Course Review:

Instructor - Joe Turner
Students - 8
Course Level - Intermediate Skills
Course of Fire - 500 rounds
Weather - Excellent Fall Day
Location - Mansfield Fish & Game

Spent 8 hours on the range with Joe practicing and learning numerous skills set exercises. Course begin with a classroom introduction, safety briefing and course overview and expectations.

Morning instruction began with several dry-fire exercises, allowing Joe to monitor and measure the students gun handling skills. The next group of exercises were accuracy drills, with timed accuracy and target transition drills being added to the exercises. More speed drills and reloading/malfunctions drills added in to the end of the morning session. Any drill with a missed shot did not earn a score. A slow time is better than a missed shot. Excellent shot groups you encouraged to increase they speed, and push to their limit.

Lunch break for an hour and we were back on the range. The afternoon began with positional shooting stance drills and then we focused on shooting on the move; forward, rearward, lateral and angular. Engaging multiple targets and movement drills for most of the afternoon.

We finished off the day with shooting from a barricade.

While we spent the day doing a lot of shooting, the majority of the drills were low round counts of 2 to 4 rounds each with accuracy being stress. Drills were repeated and practiced allowing everyone to succeed. Every round downrange had a purpose. Any missed shot created a discussion on time versus accuracy.

Overall, a very well spent day with all attending providing positive feedback at the end of the course. Joe is a very approachable instructor, looking to shared his knowledge. I'd highly recommend this course and instructor to others and looking to attend more of Joe's future classes.
