Yea dude for Montana I'd get a .270 Win, if you want something with more thump maybe a .300 Win Mag or 7mm Rem Mag. If he wants a prairie dog/deer /coyote rifle that will be flat shooting and accurate a 6mm Remington is the cats ass.

In the end I don't see this as only one rifle, more like something in a .30 cal and a .220 Swift/.243.

I'd 6mm Remington to that list, it edges out .243 Win velocity wise and is still popular out that way

Thanks for all the help guys. Was fortunate to purchase the Savage 111 Trophy Hunter XP 30-06 that somebody was nice enough to post up in this thread. Very fair price. My daughter cannot wait to give it to him for xmas. Don't know how it shoots yet, but that trigger does not suck. Pete
