Current ammo prices, have the manufacturers increased the price to the dealers?

Was just wondering after reading the FS thread on ammo. 9mm that 2 years ago was at 9.99 or maybe 10.99 for 50 is now at 18.

How much has Federal/etc. increased the price to the dealers vs. how much have the dealers just increased their profit?

And does anyone know if the manufacturers are really cranking at full capacity, or are they starving the market a bit?

I have no clue how many bullets were made per week say 1 year ago vs. now. How much went to Feds/LEO/Consumer vs. today. Would love to see this chart. We have pulled tens of thousands of military out of middle east that had to using up bullets at a rate much faster than consumers here could hoard them.

I personally think after the upcoming vote in congress for registration passes (just my opinion that it will), but AWB and capacity don't even get voted upon or aren't even part of any bill, a lot of the furor dies down, availability of ammo goes up, and prices go down. Just MHO.

I honestly had to curtail my trips to the range cuz of the extortionist prices that are going on now.

Can't wait until this crap dies down!

I had seen a few months back when FS said they are charging $18 based on what their supplier is charging them. Other places like Rileys and Wallmart have not budged. With a lot of these places, I think that someone is just gouging - whether it is the end retailer or the wholesaler in the middle.

This article suggests the ammo manufacturers have really ramped up production: Ammo Manufacturers Scramble to Keep Up with Demand, Reassure Eager Customers | CNS News
-- edit: ha, I took so long writing my reply that theGringo beat me to it with this url.. oh well... [grin]

As for inflated costs, just the nature supply and demand in a free market. When supply cannot meet demand the finite supply becomes more costly. And the increased consumer demand translates to increased demand by the ammo manufacturers to source their individual components (primers, etc). So costs naturally creep up. All said, I think the dealers are also doing their share of price gouging.

I felt like I hit the lottery today when I walked into Walmart and found they had Tulammo for 9mm and 45acp (never shot it but I know it has steel casings). $10.50 for 50 rounds of 9mm and $15 for 50 rounds of 45acp. I paid $16.50 for 9mm and $29.50 for 45acp (50 round boxes with brass casings, ball ammo) up at State Line Guns in NH on Friday. Brass vs steel not being apples to apples but the 45acp cost difference was insane to me.

My takeaway from my limited buying experience is that some opportunistic gun shops are milking the current seller's market (and limiting box counts per day also creates the potential for a more steady flow of repeat daily business). But Walmart is Walmart.. and yes even they have a 3 box limit now... but it _seems_ their ammo costs could both reflect their purchasing power coupled with the ammo manufacturers not actually gouging...

For what it's worth, Walmart is an international business with a global supply chain. Walmart is notorious for beating up suppliers on cost or not stocking the product (and sourcing something cheaper themselves to compete directly against the supplier). It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Walmart has supply contracts that prevent or limit any increases. Given they are a big seller of ammunition on a nationwide basis, it's hard to see how they compare to a local shop in a gun-grabber state as far as prices go.

Kudo's to Rileys. They have not moved their price either.
They'll get more business from me on all purchases I can make out of state.

Take a look at how many new shooters there are. I know quite a few myself who are concerned about further government regulations and finally went out and got their licenses. It's a significant number as shown by the number of new members at the gun club every month.

None of these new license holders have been able to hoard ammo. They've been lucky to find enough to go shooting. If/when they see ammo they will buy it... and buy all they can.

This is not an inexpensive hobby. A number of the folks I know who recently got licenses are well heeled. They have the cash/credit to buy in bulk and will do so whenever possible.

And we're still seeing new shooter gun classes running at capacity, so there's even more demand in the pipeline.

Oh, and the weather is getting really nice for shooting. Just seasonal demand should increase right now.

All indicators point towards low supply, high demand and higher prices IMHO.

the same rileys that supported romneybama, giver of socialist healthcare, signer of an assault weapons ban, and confirmed gun grabber?

just checking to make sure we had the same shop in mind.

they need to sell cheaper to feds - lowest bidder thing.
subsequently they need to make up a loss they took by selling to feds somehow....
oh wait, i know how! shit!
that's why it pays to buy imported ammo not local. no uncle sam surcharge bull shit

Rileys is a business. The core of Rileys customers supported Romney. Why wouldn't he put a Romney sticker on his building?

Now, that being said, Romney lost. I think Ralph (the owner of Rileys) should pull the Romney sign down and put a real Republican up there, like Rand Paul, Mike Lee, or Ted Cruz.

Hell I'd be happy if he didn't endorse any one candidate so long as he put up a "**** Obama" sign.

As to the new shooters and increased rolls at gun clubs, I can second that. Was talking a few months ago to the President of the club I belong to. They run a required new membership orientation once a month. Every month they have 30-40+ new members at these meetings, month in and month out. This is just one local club in rural Southeastern Mass.

Lot's of new demand for ammo out there... and guess what most of these new gun owners are shooting? .22lr, 9mm, .223/5.56.

Riley's has stayed at 7.95 cci mini mags
14.85 9 mm it hasn't changed at all.

If this is really the case, then the manufacturers haven't increased their prices to the dealers. I don't blame the dealers getting more, i believe in a free market. I just wanted to know. Of course, for those in MA, it's not really free as you can't purchase over the internet like others can...
