Bitcoin Thieves Threaten Real Violence for Virtual Currencies

SAN FRANCISCO — The currency they were after was virtual, but the guns they carried were anything but.

In the beach resort of Phuket, Thailand, last month, the assailants pushed their victim, a young Russian man, into his apartment and kept him there, blindfolded, until he logged onto his computer and transferred about $100,000 worth of Bitcoin to an online wallet they controlled.

A few weeks before that, the head of a Bitcoin exchange in Ukraine was taken hostage and only released after the company paid a ransom of $1 million in Bitcoin.

BITCOIN SURGING AFTER MYSTERY TRADER BUYS $344 MILLION IN CRYPTOCURRENCY
Top crypto recovering after huge crash

Top cryptocurrency bitcoin recovered to $11,000 on Monday, having almost doubled in value since hitting a low of $6,000 earlier this month.

On Sunday, its price rose to $11,328 following news that an unknown investor had bought $344 million worth of bitcoin between February 9 and February 12. The purchase was preceded by a huge sell-off that had erased more than 50 percent of the cryptocurrency market value amid speculation of growing regulation and security fears.

Bitcoin fell from $20,000 in December to below $6,000 on February 4. However, after the news of the huge buy, other investors poured money into crypto-assets.

“Not sure who that big buyer was but many have bought this dip and have added since the rebound and additional regulatory clarity in the US and Asia,” Alex Sunnarborg, founding partner of Tetras Capital said, as quoted by Marketwatch.

With the SEC looking at regulating it, do you think Cryptos will become even more popular?

NY City Weighs 18-Month "Moratorium" On Bitcoin-Mining

What happens when you allow government to meddle in services like electricity? They get to decide what to ban of course!

Maybe they should have a moratorium on trucking too, that way we could keep home heating fuel prices down over the winter

I think so and expect that to open the true floodgates, especially as brokerages pick them up, removing the tech component for investors (similar to how stock shares are held in street name).

It's interesting that a cryptocurrency becoming a high return and/or highly volatile investment is in direct contradiction to it becoming a widely used currency.

Billions in cryptocurrency wealth wiped out after hack

The price of Bitcoin has dropped more than 7% due to South Korea's Coinrail exchange being targeted by cyber thieves. The exchange released a statement on Monday, confirming it had suffered a security breach that resulted in about 30% of its cryptocurrencies being stolen.

Coinrail says it is cooperating with investigating authorities, but did not disclose the total value stolen. The theft was reportedly of less-well known cryptocurrencies, not Bitcoin.

Coinrail is not an especially popular exchange in South Korea, but news of the breach has hit the crypto market hard, with prices for most popular tokens including Bitcoin, Ethereum, and Litecoin all plunging.

According to CoinMarketCap.com, almost $30 billion worth of crypto wealth has disappeared over the past seven hours of trading.

Bitcoin was trading at around $6,750 in early afternoon trading in Asia. That's near its lowest level in about two months and around half the price at which it started the year.

"Investors have been increasingly worried about cybersecurity issues," said Adrian Lai, founding partner at Hong Kong-based investment firm Orichal Partners. "At this stage, obviously, the standard is not high enough."

    You are welcome :D

I didn’t realize you could buy partial coins.

I’d open an account at Apmex but don’t want to tank the gold market.

Imagine buying 'abitcoin back last December at $15K and have it worth $6,300 right now.

I, for one, am glad a lot of the 'abitcoin mania has quieted down. This crap has to die a quiet death.

LOL. Well, I guess people could start trying to use it as a currency like it was intended, instead of just hoping to get rich by holding it. It is still more stable than the currency of Venezuela.

Another awesome couple weeks in Crypto’s - I bought in another $200 a couple weeks ago split between Bitcoin & Litecoin. That’s $400 total.

Today (19NOV18) it’s worth $257 /. I have to drop Glenn Beck a thank you note.

One week later (26NOV18) it's worth $192 - and Beck is running another one of those Crypto ads for Teeka.
