What is the best way to get the same sight picture every time. It seems like I put my eye in a different position frequently. Height of eye to the sight and front to rear distance of the eye to the rear sight.
I imagine it would make my shots better if I was in the same position every time.

Thanks, Mike

Mike,

Yes, Consistent Head position / sight picture is a critical component to shooting well.

You can get great info and feedback here but I would also recomend the AMU Service Rifle Guide and the AMU "Mind Over Matter" DVD set from the CMP.

The basics and more of much of what you need to know to do well are in that book and those dvd's.

I also would recommend those general books and will share my technique. I make sure the buttstock is in the same place on my shoulder, establish a good cheek to stock weld touching my nose to the charging handle in the same place for reference.

I have only been shooting my AR with iron sights for a few months. Before that my ARs have been set up with glass or red dots. This year shooting the cmp clinic reduced yardage targets with my Garand and AR my scores have really climbed from 250ish to a consistantly in the 390s only shooting 60rnds once a month thats good for me!
Member gave me some good advice: Plant your chin on the comb and slowly but firmly slide your cheak down until you find your eye behind the sight. Try and do this so your nose just touches the chargeing handle. He also stress do not stress your neck or hunch up trying to reach the chargeing handle with your nose. Find a natural comfortable posistion and repeat it.

the more I shoot, the less I find sight alignment being ultra critical. what IS critical is consistent head position / NPA. maintain a consistent position, solid NPA, and good head position, and they'll always go where ya point em.

NPA= Natural point of aim ? The gent who has given me a few tips here and there stress natural point of aim. or Sweet spot where you dont have to fiddle much or try to hold a correction of your sights. He was telling my friend " I really dont care what you see through your rear sight. You can pin the front sight to the top of the peep hole. As long as you do the same thing everytime." He even went as far as saying something like " I dont care if you use your front sight protector ears to aim, just make sure your stick to one side.

That is EXACTLY what I was taught too!! works well.
