Contemplating Moving to a More Free State

There's also the practical problem of owning DDs or AOWs. There just aren't many say grenade launchers out and about.

Lol, you can buy a brand new 40mm M203 or whatnot if you want, the ammo obviously is a different story.

There are also a ton of shotguns that are designated as DDs, like Striker-12, etc, so on. I think the USAS-12 is one, too, and there are a bunch of others as well.

RI does allow for manufacturing of MGs with a permit:

11-47-19

I think the statute is mostly a historic relic.

Right, but out of ten thousand gun owners (not a bad guess for the pre-COVID RI 2A community), how many own DDs?

Alll the libtards are fleeing high tax states to Red States and bringing their politics with them.

Some of these people arent full blown libtards but are what I would call "Statist enough to be dangerous". At best a lot of them are dead weight and will do nothing to combat the scourge of communism/socialism.... they don't "get it" and think they can just relax. thats not how it works...

Correct, the AG must issue a permit to manufacture a machine gun and when I asked, the refused

Mr. Kenick, the statute uses the word "may", which awards the RIAG discretionary authority to issue a permit. The RIAG is not required to issue a permit to manufacture a MG. Let's not confuse "may" versus "shall", there's an important distinction.

You are correct. I meant it in another manner. I meant that you "must get a permit from the AG", who will not issue one. I did not mean that the law says "must issue." I can see where my wording was easily misinterpreted

Greetings from coastal NC (Carteret County, Morehead City). Moved here from MA in 2017 after living there our whole lives.

Bought a 3300sf house on a half acre, with underground utilities. Good schools. Hospital is ~ 2 miles away. Beaches, boat ramps, etc. all nearby. every store and restaurant you can think of. My property taxes are ~$2300/yr combined for town and county. I paid $315k (from a distressed seller). Did ~15k worth of repairs, and my house is easy $425k now.

Everyone has guns. We all voted for Trump (town, county, and state all voted RED).

Put this same house on the cape and it would have cost $800k, with taxes probably close to $15k.

There is life outside New England.
We use to go to Sunset Beach for a few years, that's down past Wilmington. We like coastal NC quite a bit and it's on our list of retirement states. I just worry about hurricanes. Having to think about rebuilding everything as an older person drains me. I just looked at where you're located on the map. How did you fair with the hurricanes?

When we left MA, we went to NM.
Then to AZ. Our town is 3,600 population, about 40 minutes north of Tucson proper.
I saw a bumper sticker on a car that had the outline of CA on it and it said "go home".
Now that I'm here I feel the same way about liberal MA refugees coming here for the wrong reasons....
May I ask why you left New Mexico? I went out there for training and fell in love with the state. It's on my list, but I know it has a bad blue streak.

BigGreen
We lived in Silver City and had a beautiful place--6,500 altitude,10 acres overlooking a canyon and watching the sunsets over mountains in AZ.
Our big issue was Medical care (Gila Regional Medical Center was terrible), and as my wife and I aged, we found ourselves driving to Tucson for specialists.
I wanted to know that if I had an emergency the ambulance would take me to a hospital, not to the Med Ctr where I'd get on the helicopter and be flown to Tucson. We're really comfortable in Oracle and the culture is great, and gun friendly. And NM is changing.
disregard my previous question, this answered it. Thank you.

how's flooding? close to the Mississippi? Tornados?

Most of the places where there is flooding the house and the land is so friggan cheap you can just budget some bucks into things to lift it off the ground, like the dude with the elevated
mansion. IIRC theres a pic of a dude with a porsche and some other car on floats, and the first floor of his house was basically built so it would be a couple feet above typical flood water level... so worse thing that happened in a flood was his garage got flooded, woopty do.

(Notwithstanding New Mexico having a wicked blue streak),
now I'm thinking that someone with 8(?) figures to throw around
shoulda bought the Imus Ranch for Kids with Kancer.
It's even backed up against a mesa - talk about a backstop.

(I actually spotted it once flying United back from Los Angeles to Logan,
got a few photos on the camera).

When Florence hit we got 25" of rain. It appeared as though one corner of a cardboard box in my garage got damp. A shutter blew off the side of the house. $3 hinge fixed it. Cleaned up some branches too. Others got it way worse. Even though I'm 800 yds from the sound I'm at sufficient elevation I'm not in a flood zone. So I don't fear water from rain or tidal influence. Just wind.

Maine. I moved here 3 months ago and could not be happier. REgardless of what the pundits say about being blue, this state is a Red state with just a veneer of blue which could easily be removed. Hunting and fishing here are wonderful. Snow has been low for the past three years including this one and you've got the ocean to play with. What ocean are you going to see in Montana or Wyoming? (I've been to both states to explore and love them but it's not New England). Maine has Constitutional Carry; no permits! Bought a revolver the other day with just my driver's license. People here are what makes the difference!

I was listening to a couple of ham operators the other day, one being from Idaho...he was incensed at all the commies from cali moving to Wyoming, Idaho and Montana...he was saying you can't get away from them. He was talking to a guy from AZ. The guy from AZ was telling him, just wait until they get into government. Nowhere is safe anymore.
Been going on for a long time. I visited Idaho about 15-20 years ago. They were bitching about Cali commies moving in back then.

... I am corresponding with a few good NES members about potential areas of Texas to look at.
FPrice has it right - Its not just Which State, but which City / County in that state.
There are current and still active NES'rs from each of the states you're considering. Get the inside scoop.
I've lived in OH, CO, CA, SC, NC, as well as MA and spent some months in TX too, but not as 'resident'. I'll add:
  • CO can OK'ish once you reach the continental divide and west (Leadville) but are you sure that's where you want to be
  • Add Tenn to the list just not some more liberal cities
  • SC is really 2 1/2 states,
    • The 'Low Country' GA Coastal Line up thru Charleston and on up the coast a bit
    • Tourist Coast (Mytle Beach, et al)
    • Up State: Columbia and NW
  • NC is similarly 3 regions and like SC, its the in-between parts you want
    • OBX - Coastal Tourist land
    • Piedmont; Capital Raleigh & Wake county is much like MA as is Charlotte
    • Foothills: Is either crunchy Asheville / or conservative mountain towns
  • TX is pretty clear... Austin is BS Crazy Liberals and the tech boom isn't helping it. Other areas still pretty Cowboy dominate
You get the idea - There is someone here with experience in each... Look before you leap.

My first choice was eastern TN. I landed a dream job in AL so we moved here a couple of years ago. We have loved it here. A mcmansion on 10 acres for $1400/yr in property taxes. I am close to work which happens to be the highest tax county in the state. Agree that there are not many gun clubs around. I am ~1hr from CMP and setting up my home range. People are friendly--none of the tension from up north. Work life balance is real. Did I mention BBQ?

Maine is a great state. We had a place in bethel for twelve years. We sold it this summer. Skiing of course, is one of our passions. Used to love the ocean. But i got over it. Too many people for me. Actually... same problem with skiing in Maine these days as well. With that said, it is still a great state. Especially if you go way up.

What town are you in? I think you told me before, but I forgot.

Chillin in Livingston mt. There are no politics here. Everybody says hello. Employees in stores go out of their way to help you. It is like stepping back in time. My wife and i are heading out one of the evenings to take nighttime pics of the downtown area. I will share them with you guys if they come out half decent. Not everywhere sucks in this country!20210125_172916.jpg

It's funny you mention Livingston, I used to live there and a friend of mine just left because it's getting too liberal. Perspective I guess. I do miss the Office and Neptune's though...
