If by reporting a crime, you end up incriminating yourself, then you should be protected by the 5th amendment and not have to report that crime.

You might have something there... If felons don't have to register their illegally possessed gun as that would be tantamount to requiring testimony against oneself, then this is too. Of course, SCOTUS has largely dismissed taking the 5th as an admission of guilt...
