So, I've been mulling it over in my head for awhile and even moreso since what happened in AZ and decided that if all goes well next month and my adopted new hometown grants me an ALP in the course of my renewal, I'm going to carry concealed.

I've got experience with guns- I've been collecting for the last 10+ years and have been shooting since I was 15. While I do keep guns ready for home defense, I haven't any experience in actually carrying a gun outside the confines of a range or on my own property.

I know there are courses out there and have taken the requisite firearms safety class - but what is a good, no bullshit class on conccealed carry that covers the every day reality of carrying a gun for self-defense? I know 90% of it is not putting myself in a situation where its needed, but beyond that, I must admit some ignorance.

I took GOAL's "Art of Concealed Carry". It was a good mixture of equipment, philosophy, and legal issues. The legal issues alone make the class worth it. I always tell my BFS students to take a CCW class if they also intend to carry.

Another +1 for GOAL's Art of Concealed Carry course.

Then spend some time/money at MFS on their simulator for info on shoot/don't shoot tactical training (laser and compressed air, no live ammo).

The best coverage of the lawful use of deadly force is given by Mas Ayoob. I would take his classroom portion: MAG-20/Classroom – Armed Citizen’s Rules of Engagement See: http://massadayoobgroup.com/?page_id=121

GOAL's class is a good intro and covers MA law, but doesn't cover deadly force in as much detail as Ayoob.

SigArms has a concealed carry class which is a fair intro to the shooting part (drawing from concealment, defensive shooting, etc.), but is weak on the laws: http://www.sigsaueracademy.com/Courses/ShowCourseDetails.aspx?CourseID=118

Randy Cain's Tactical Handgun 101 is excellent in covering defensive shooting, but doesn't cover concealment or legal issues: http://www.cumberlandtactics.com/Handgun.htm

Unfortunately, this class is booked until August (I went to go sign up). Bummer.

The GOAL class is a great coverage of legal and other issues. I've take it every couple of years as a refresher. The NEShooters Defensive Handgun class will get you up to speed on the gun handling and shooting skills you need for defensive shooting situations without costing you an arm and a leg.
