Since I started competing service rifle last year, my desire to plink has just died. Can't have fun shooting at random targets.
Took the kids out yesterday afternoon with the franken Bush/DPMS/Armalite topped with EOTECH carbine and a bunch of M193 with the plan on whacking the swinging chicken.
The chicken surely died. Over, and over, and over.
I didn't find it fun.
Kept getting the urge to run up and get the M1A and do some serious offhand practice.
I'm bummed.
Is there a cure??

Plinking is less fun when there's little chance of missing the target.
I don't know why and I'm not bragging, just something I've noticed.
Perhaps some more challenging targets would help.
Have you ever tried splitting a playing card, mounted edgewise?

I have not shot rifle much since I was a teenager. In fact, besides finding attractive things running around in skirts (I said SKIRTS, NOT Kilts), I was getting bored with the rifle. It wasn't until I was older and discovered pistols and all the things that exist to have fun with those that I began shooting again.

Even then, I kept switching my activity. I don't have the desire to drill so hard to be the best of the best. I get no satisfaction in the demands of that activity. What I want to do is have fun.

You just have to decide what you like and know when it's time to try new things.

Instead of that stationary swinger, drive a tent spike in near the top of the berm, hang a long piece of parachute cord off it and tie a woolite bottle on the end near the bottom of the berm. Now, load up the rifle to capacity. Your goal is to shoot so that each shot tosses the woolite bottle, and your next shot tosses it again BEFORE it comes to a stop. Continue until out of ammo. see if that adds the needed 'challenge' you were looking for.

No matter what, realize when the 'fun' is gone and when it's time to look for something new to try.

This is sooooo…. true. I'm coming back from a nearly 8 year lay off from shooting and competing. I did it so much I got sick of it.

The cure is getting Distinguished. [wink]

Isn't that like the long march or the trail of sorrow? [crying]

It took me so long to get there. I snatched defeat from the jaws of victory more times than I can count. I bet you did it in three matches?[smile]

M16. The only time I'd shoot the 14 was the Marine Corps Championships and 1K matches.

And I hated it... [smile]

i found myself in a similar situation about a year and a half ago...i was getting tired of knocking out x - rings with my scoped rifles so i moved to iron sights and soon got bored of that too...i wanted to see the impact of my shots do something besides leave a neat lil hole in paper...thats when i discovered skeet shooting...totally different from rifle shooting and if your a rifle shooter not easy at all to pick up...i was so used to lining up sights and trigger squeeze and breathing techniques it took me a while to get used to the shotgun...but man is it fun watching those birds explode...even better when you challenge a few friends...try it...it worked for me

Lack of a pistol grip and poor weight balance...

Punk..... If I can handle a 50 cal I can handle a .308 [thinking]

Interestingly enough, there's no "bitch-slap" emoticon...

PS: Derek - great shot of you and Brent in the current GOAL newsletter!
